Default oil pump dilema

I have a few questions about replacing my oil pump,

1. how do i remove the shaft from the old oil pump? the old oil pump is the one on the red rag, does it come apart at the red part?

2. Can i replace the screen by just swapping the bottoms of the pumps.

Thanks guys!

Take the drive off at the red plastic coupler and get another one. get one to replace it. I don't know about using the base.

With your muscles. You will probably break the nylon coupler anyway, so just twist and tug it away from the pump. Get a Melling IS-55E shaft. It has a metal coupler (better). http://shbox.com/1/op_shaft.jpg

I would not use the cover from the old pump. They can get wear in them from the gears. I personally don't like to reuse a screen, either. The interference fit in the pump will not be as tight if you remove and reuse. Orient the angle of the new screen just like the old.

Like shbox said, go to your local parts store and purchase the melling IS-55E oil pump drive shaft. It is only about $10. It is money well spent instead of trying to buy the coupler alone.

The stock coupler works just fine when installed properly (always use a new one). Ever noticed how many late model high mileage small blocks are out there?

NAPA should have about anything you need. Including a new pick-up.

I used to work at Advance a few years back and we definitely stocked the IS55E shaft.

Okay guys, you would think after I got the pick up tube, and the drive shaft with the metal coupler I would be done, well not quite, The oil pick-up tube is IMPOSSIBLE to install! I have tried over and over with no luck, and i don't want to bend or disfigure this pump! how did you guys install yours (pick-up tube is a 5/8") here's some pics! ---------->

Thanks again guys (And advanced had both in stock!) (surprising I KNOW! )

It's an interference fit. You need an installation tool.

If you don't have an installation tool, use an open end wrench to slip over the pipe and butt against the little collar. Hammer on the wrench close to the pipe. You have to hold the pump still and the pipe has to go in perfectly straight for it to get started. It is not always an easy task. Get the angle of the screen correct before it goes in much or you might not be able to adjust it later. You might try cooling the screen, too.

Thanks SHBOX! From reading your pages, I know I can trust your info! and thank you fergymoto for your continued support and help, anyone can feel free to respond to this post. by any chance (totally off topic) can you estimate my the general range HP/TQ and quarter times? just getting a little excited, getting close to finishing up the motor and I'm priming the oil pump tonight after i get this damn OIL SCREEN in the DAMN HV PUMP! *stock pan* also here are the mods if you are so inclined! LT4 hot cam, TB by-pass, Comp Cams 1.6rr, LT4 Spring (I believe got a kit from "paceperformance.com") Ported: Airfoil, Throttle body, and Manifold, Pacesetter Long tubes with off-road Y, magnaflow cat (taking this off for tuning) SLP Loud mouth (1 I believe no idea) 160 thermo, SLP fan switch, Hotchkis rear suspension kit (panhard rod, And trailing arms) B&M Short shifter, skip shift delete....... In the near future I will have 4.10's in the rear (maybe 3.73's but not likely, I hear 4.10's are fine for daily driving)
Thanks in advance guys!

Probably high 12s/low 13s. Once you learn what it likes at the tracks probably 12s no problem.

i bolted the pump to the block, then used a soft rubber mallet to pound the pickup into the pump. when i got it where i wanted it, i welded it in place.
