Default Car is Cutting Out Completely. Strange.

hey Guys, cars been giving me some issues recently, it feels like its been down on power for a while. it was either running rich or I wasnt firing on a cylinder at first.

Now when rev it in nuetral it will rev all the way to redline, no problem, but when I put it in gear and try (put the engine under load), it will run up to about 3K and just stop.

RPM wont fall, if I keep my foot in it they will stay at 3K but you have no power, no increase in RPM and no decrease, and no sound.

Let off, and as soon as it drops 100 or 200 rpm it runs fine, get back on it, and bam it will do it again.

RPM where it cuts off varys slightly. Its been as low as 2700 and high as about 3200, and It will rev slightly higher in 1st than in the other gears.

Car has a GM opti thats about 15K old, went in when cam went in. Also has a TRE 255 fuel pump that went in at the same time.

Any guidance on were to start?

Hmm Try checking the cats if you still have them and try to check the fuel pressure. Is it stalling?

No cats, will check fuel pressure when I get a chance.

It doesnt stall, it run a little strange but it will idle and run under 3K fine.

Did die today, was driving and hit about 3K in 5th and it cut out and then died, pushed the clutch in and fired right back up.

If the MAF is bad the car will run way better unplugged.

Unplugging sensors does not pinpoint which one is bad. Because the diagnostic circuit is closed, once a sensor is unplugged the PCM will go into open loop and no sensor information is used.

There is more to the equation of a proper fuel mixture than just the MAF. The PCM relies on other sensors along with the MAF to do so. If the PCM does not receive info from one of those sensors it will go into open loop via breaking the diagnostic curcuit and go into open loop.
Not saying it isn't the MAF. It very well could be, but the most accurate way to analyze a problem like this is to get live data via scan tool to determine whether it is a sensor or mechanical issue.

This is just my opinion after having 3 GM MAFs get dirty or go bad, and its an easy way to diagnose the problem, wich worked for me and was told by my tuner wich has done hundreds of tunes on GM cars.

Just did a bit more reading and discovered the MAF is used at all times regardless in open or closed loop. It is the only way for the PCM to determine how much air is entering the engine. In open loop the MAF is still operational. If MAF signal is lost then PCM will revert to speed density.
Apologies for the bad info...
