Are you talking about the wide flap that hangs down?

yeah, i assumed it was to push out air but the guy who painted my bumper mentioned that it may also be there to help keep the radiator cool.

Worse that is gonna happen is the motor will run hotter. Just watch the gauge.

i was watching this a.m. on the way to work and it pretty much stayed at or above 210. is that normal or on the high side? forgive my ignorance, ive not owned the car very long and ive been out of the lt1 scene for several years.

I would put it back on. This was on my third gen when this happened 7 years back, but still I had attached my air dam with zip ties as the car didn't have a air dam when I bought it and was running hot. (new radiator and thermostat) Well car still ran hot as the air dam was flexing, got the bolts for it, car ran nice and cool.

I guess it would depend on your thermostat, but yes that seems high, 210. Mine runs around 170-180.

Lt1's were built to run hot to help lower emissions. Mine seems to run cool as long as im not stuck in traffic and i've still got the stock thermostat. Mine is probably runs around 180ish.

running hot is good for emissions, running cooler is better for power
mine sits at 170 w/ a 160 tstat and be cool radiator.. I think I'll see what taking off the air dam does on my car this summer. having no air dam will definatly help w/ aerodynamics reducing front end lift at high speeds. I'd swap out to a lower tstat and reprogram the fans and see what happens

the air dam pushes air across the radiator. without out the air dam your car will overheat or have the fans on all the time. Put it back on!

^^^^ What he said!!!
Without it, you have zero airflow through the radiator without the fans on.

Do not remove the air dam its a very crucial component of the cooling system.

The air dam:

1) improves cooling

2) reduces overall drag especially at higher speeds

3) keeps the front end from unloading at 70+ mph

4) improves highway mpg

5) looks cool

6) tells you when you are close enough to parking lot bumpers

7) plows snow that's too deep

Keep it.

10.) Scratches up your front/back when removing the serpentine belt, doing oil changes, etc.

doesn't the air damn increase drag? its what I've been told and what makes sense if you think about it considering it disrupts airflow pushing it upwards through the radiator, with out it the air should flow smoother..right? wrong?

Wrong, it actually cleans up the airflow under the car.

heres a post I found on it, not the one I was looking for but mitch knows his stuff!

But the LOW pressure zone it creates behind the lower air dam, pulls that air out of the engine bay and under the car. That's the lift you feel.

If you pull the weather strip between the hood and cowl, it will pull air into the engine bay, not release it out. You don;t want to do this because it the packs the engine bay with air and reduces flow across the radiator.

If you louver the hood towards the nose, like a Mecham hood, then the engine bay pressure is released out and a lot of that air doesn;t go under the car.
