Default Rumor

We've all heard it. Once you switch to synthetic oil you can't go back to conventional oil. Just wondering why you can't switch back if you wanted to or is this just another myth? (I have no plans on going back to conventional)

It is a myth based on a old time when it used to be a truth. Some people just don't understand how oil chemistry and compatibility has changed over the years.

I say **** it and just dump whatever I can find in there and let it sort itself out.
Actually I've heard that LT1's should run good ol' ground oil instead of synthetic because it cleans out the engine too much. Not too sure what to believe anymore. I still run synthetic though, and with no problems.

Could caused seal issues

Sometimes the residual oils in the motor would not react favorably chemically to the new oils added leading to sludge, corrosion, and even mechanical failure.

Sometimes it would cause people to be anally raped.

The great thing now is the fact that all the current oils are also made to current Milspec standards. One of the criteria for this is that all Milspec oils have to be safe to work and mix with other Milspec oils. The military doesn't want to be in the field shooting enemy combatants and when they run low on oil in their Humvees, have to worry about whether the oil that is handed to them will work with the oil that is in their vehicle.

If you have used plain ol conventional oil an then switch to synthetic, the synthetic oil will clean the sludge from around the seals that is left over from the conventional oil, thus creating leaks. If your seals are good, you'll have no issues. But i'v seen way too many people switch to synthetic and then leak like crazy. I'v even seen new seals leak from synthetic oil. I replaced all my gaskets and seals when i pulled my motor, and i'v used full synthetic valvoline and a k&n oil filter, the only issue i have had is the rear main seaping a tiny little bit, i noticed when i had to replace my clutch (that blew at 70mph) lol.

I've always heard that if everything is good in your motor, seals, rings, gaskets then if you flush the motor real good you can switch back to conventonal.

you don't actually have to flush anything, you can just switch. oil is not what it used to be, you can switch anything now, weight, conv, syn, whatever. You just need to know what you need and what you can get away with as far as leaks and whatnot. I have a 1995 grand cherokee with the 5.2 that i went to synthetic with, after about 700 mils it developed some pretty bad leaks (crank seal, seaping pan, and a bad rear main drip). I bought some crappy conventional oil and some motor honey, after about 200 miles the leaks we're gone, just goes to show you really need to know the condition of you seals and gaskets. It is always fixable though too.

Honestly you could mix the two and not have any problems.
