I would like to thank the OP for posting this poll, with 75% of responders sofar stating 0-1 optis this should help a little in correcting the undeserved bad reputation.

Yes there are guys spinning high that have rotor issues but that is beyond what the vast majority of us are doing and actually I am taking a stock unit solidly over 6500 reliably with just a little locktite. If you have a stock to heads/cam car and have a lot of opti issues they are CAUSED by something.

Still on the stock one, 113k miles and 15 years old. It's been through at least two water pump failures and other incidences of getting wet as well.

I'm replacing the cap&rotor but keeping the stock opti during my rebuild. Nothing wrong it though.

I'm pretty sure my caprice still has the original at 231k miles. The previous owner had the service records and nothing about replacing the opti (other than a couple of cap&rotor swaps).

i have a stock car i have i/e and i've been through like 4 or 5 and they have been gm performance parts ones... on my opti though i notice some oil on the white part when i take it off and the inside has ALOT of blue corrosion. I have a brand new waterpump and i'm tired of replacing opti's

Three on my old car. First one went at 25k mi, the rotor just crumbled to pieces when I took it apart. The second lasted 10k mi before it started arching everywhere, causing a random miss and pop. Third one has been good so far, it's only been 2weeks tho lol. Although the car still had a miss, so the valve covers were pulled to find a broken spring. Swapping the 1.7's put the springs to close to coil bind and broke one i guess... They had 10k mi on them anyways, so patriot golds were installed in place, now the car is absolutely raping! I might have to buy it back lol!!

switched from the OEM unit to the MSD chasing a random issue...turned out to not be related to the opti.

But it did need to be replaced, it was incredibly corroded on the inside when I pulled it apart.

origional 110K mile opti

When I bought my car it had been sitting 4 years and still started right up. I pulled the motor to build a few months ago and cant decide wheather I should buy a new one or just get a cap n rotor. Ill probably just get an MSD and keep it for a spare.

you know, this illustrates a point I've always thought about...

everyone bitches about the opti spark design, yea, it's in a stupid spot, but when you step back and look at it these cars are getting pretty damn old, and not a lot of cars are driven as hard as fbody's are...lots and lots of people on here are still using FACTORY parts installed in the early/mid 90's! that's pretty damned good in my book.

What ignition/distributor system doesn't have problems when it gets wet/moisture on or in it? There's plenty of other worse things that could have gone wrong with these cars...I'm just thankful all I have to bitch about with my car is the opti, headlight motors, and maybe the rear end down the road...that's damn respectable in my book for a 16 year old car thats been driven like hell...

just my .02

my 5th one was the MSD pro billit...no problems since. I am convinced the what killed my Opti's(other than the first one) is sudden RPM slowing when hitting 2nd. I blew nearly all mine by hitting 2nd. 7000rpm-4500 suddenly, and there would go a rotor. I believe high revving, quick shifting, 6 speed owners will be the ones with more issues. Since I put the MSD in...no more problens for over 10K now. Stockers were lasting less than 5k when drivin hard.

Changed mine at 155k for breaking up on higher rpm's. Other than that it ran good.

u need to expand your poll to beyond 5.
let's see here:
stock (80k)
ac delco (85k, got hosed down with oil/coolant)
6 autozone opti's (from 85k to 90k, thank God for lifetime replacement!)
another ac delco (still going strong.)

so, my car's had 9 opti's penetrate the front cover...
