Default Opti replacement gone wrong

My Dad's friend (and current owner of my old 93 z28) had his Opti go on him. He replaced it along with the control module. Now the car will start but just barely stay running, and that's only if he keeps the gas to the floor.

Any ideas what he may have done wrong? Or what may still be broken? I only owned an lt1 car for about a month before it was totaled and he bought it from me, so I'm not real knowledgeable when it comes to them

Plug wires on wrong is the most common. It COULD be installed wrong into the cam gear. It is possible even on the splined ones, happened to me once.

Unless the opti is a dud what gregrob said could be possible. its very easy to mix up those wires. and even tho you wouldnt think you could mix up the splined shaft you can.

So is there more than one way for the opti to go onto the shaft? I thought it had 1 way? Would this give you the symptoms of an engine out of time, (surging, backfiring and will not idle or tries to backfire thru the intake?) This is what my car is doing after the opti swap, will not idle, surges, sounds like it has a monster cam in it at 2000 rpm's. I am in the process of tracing the wires to see if I mixed them up (hope that is it).

The opti slid right onto the the shaft. It took a good hour to find the sweet spot, but when I did it slid right on and went fully on. No the timming chain is untouched. Never went that deep.
