sorry bud but the only CARB legal headers for a 97 are hooker shorties or edelbrock shorties and either one will run you close to 600 dollars which will not leave much budget for a catback

I worked with about the same budget and went with pacesetter lts for headers. they have all the emission hook ups and are fairly cheap. For the exhaust I picked up my own muffler and took it to a local muffler shop and had them custom make me a full exhaust header back. They custom made the y-pipe for cats and all. the prices were about 300 for headers, 80 for muffler, and 375 for the custom exhaust. I went with the cheaper painted headers instead of the ceramic since i was planning on wrapping them anyways.

Find a lenient smog shop and get some LT headers. Don't waste your time with shorties...

Yeah, LT's are definitely the way to go to build power, but you'll pay $$$ for them... You can pick up a Flowmaster American Thunder cat-back system from summit (www.summitracing.com) for about $400 I think... I paid somewhere around there, but I've got a '94.

Pacesetter shorties are the best value in headers, but again, they're not huge power-gainers, and not the prettiest.

X2. Previous owner before me had shorties on my car and I just swapped to LT, ORY, and noticed a HUGE difference in power

If you have to deal with the smog police, then I would get a good cat back and high flow cat and have a good muffler shop make you a mandrel bent y pipe. The stock y pipe is the most restrictive part of the system. Forgot if you were 96-97, but if you are 93-95 single cat, that is the way to go. I did mine like that, and sure headers will bring you max hp and torque, but if they are not legal, then the route I just mentioned. Also later on you could get a deal on a set of shorties, and they would still work with this setup.

Magnaflow makes a 3" replacement y pipe. Thats what i have on my car thru a high flow magnaflow cat and the slp lm1 cat back. Probably flows almost as good as shorties. Its as loud as i could stand it now. When i get headers im gonna get a new cat back.

Definitely go with the lts. they are a little harder to put on but its worth it. And since you are on a tight budget i wouldn't even worry about a high flow cat. they are pretty expensive and you don't get much out of them. Maybe a couple hp if your lucky.
