LT-1 vs LT1 article

Back in the day GM always under rated the HP numbers for insurance purposes, such as the 1970 LS6, it was rated at 450 HP where in fact it made closer to 500, even the 427 made close to the 500 mark. A friend of mine had a 1970 LT1, put 4.11 gears, headders, rest was stock. With slicks he was running 12.2's. I get pissed at the fact where magazine articles will say that the LS6 ran like 14 quarter mile times, but they don't say that's on bias ply tires smoking them all the way down the track. I saw a 70 LS6 chevelle run the quarter in the mid 13's smoking the tires pretty much through the 1/8..Same as the LT1, they claim 14.1 in the quarter, maybe with Granny behind the wheel..

There was a SPEED show like two years ago where they ran all these old cars again using both the stock tires, and then modern drag radials and the differences were huge! A couple of them were in the 12s stock.
Its crazy the skinny little slippery tires they had under those beastly engines.

A guy I worked with back in the early 70s had a '66 Dodge Charger, with the 426 Hemi. He bought it brand new. It came from the factory with 7.75-14 tires!! Admittedly, they were GoodYear Blue Streaks, but nonetheless, a car with close to 500 hp, on tires with a 4" tread width!!
