thinking of going single plane intake carburator setup. help needed. I made 403rwhp through a 6 speed and 9" rear end with my 306 cam and LE1 heads and a LE ported intake manifold. Will I gain anything going to a single plane or dual plane intake with a carburator over my LE ported intake manifold?
Does EFI make better power than a carburated engine? If so will I at least make better power by going single plane intake/carburator setup over my LE ported intake mainfold/EFI setup?
What intake and carburator should I go with? I know summit sells a dual plane intake for the lt1, is this not as good as a single plane? If not will it at least be better than than my LE ported intake manifold that I already have?
Also the main reason I want to go carb is because I am tired of having to have my computer tuned anytime I do a major upgrade. What price am I looking at when converting to carburator?

You realize you have to tune a carburated setup too right? You might not use a laptop but it does need to be tuned... And if you dont know what you're doing it can be a lot tougher than EFI. The feedback is much different.
A carb needs to be tuned as well, but it is much easier in certain aspects. If you're not extremely computer competent, EFI tuning via a program+laptop can be pretty difficult. Then again, it's not so much computer competency, it's more or less your ability and understanding of all the different parameters and tables that can or need to be adjusted to a decided value. Personally, I won't go any further than data-logging my car and uploading tunes. I'll leave the tuning to the tuners lol. If I had a carb setup, that would be a different story for me. Both require skill and knowledge on the subject. Take it for what it's worth!
the way i see it, after you get a decent carb, converted intake, fuel pump and lines.... you could have bought an aftermarket EFI system that's LOADS easier and faster to tune.
They are two different animals. A single plane sucks for low-end but rapes up top. A dual plane retains more of that low-end grunt but isn't as efficient at the higher RPMs as a single plane. I think it's more a matter of what you are using the car for.
So I would want the single plane with my 306 cam. It peaks at 6200rpms and holds it till 6800rpms. What single plane would you recommend?

Verdad Gallardo Honestly if all you have is a 306 the ported stock intake isn't holding you back. I would only consider the single-plane if I were running a solid roller (or hefty HR) well up past 7k, probably more like 7500+. That's where the single planes really shine.

Sure you can offset the cost of the swap a little bit, but EFI can provide so much more over a carb setup. There will be a few people (like suicidalracing) who will chime in and say otherwise, but if I were in your boat, I would convert to FAST (or equivalent) before I ever went to a carb.

i was seriously thinking about going carbed. the pro systems i wanted to run was like 979 bucks. i wanted to run e85, they wanted me to run a belt driven pump ($$$$), plus the regulator, fuel log, y block, lines, filters, throttle cable, distributor, ignition box, coil, etc. You can probably do it pretty cheap, but you'll be VERY disappointed in the performance of it IMO. Goodbye driveability with a big cam too...
im converting to carb now..if you know what your doing an can get parts cheap or have buddys then the carb swap is hell of cheap to do..i have a full blown carb swap thread that will give you an idea of the cost when using all new parts.
for me i got a msd 6al of here for a lt1 and am saleing the harness and coil..so said an done i paid 150$ for my used msd 6al..
picked up my blaster coil for 20$ and my msd distributer for 60$
picked up a used holley 750 cfm dp carb for 75$ and bought a rebuild kit for 40$ so 115$ for my carb.
Im getting my holley strip dominater single plane intake for 50$
i bought a used complete electric csi water pump an 160 therm off here for 125$
im still up in the air if im going to use the stock fuel pump and then use a bypass reg or to just use a holley blue for the motor an make it a dead headed system..i also just got a n2o kit for 200$ for the motor so im trying to decide to use 1 fuel system or run 2 seperate ones.
you will need a balancer which cost 100$,95 timing cover and then the timing cover plug with timing pointer on it which is 65$ new.
dont forget that you will need to use a 700r4,th350,th400 or glide seeing the 4l60e are pcm controled.

yep..i was going to do the bolt on lt1 record but i couldnt see paying 275$ for a new lt1 carb dual plane,specialy seeing i would only have used it a couple times and then been switching to a single plane anyways..i could port my holley and still have less in it then a new lt1 carb intake.
if your not in a rush you can find very good parts used and get them cheap and build a good combo..as you see not counting my n2o kit,balancer or timing pointer all that **** new would of ran me 1k easy
heres some info
team g 7531,victor jr 2975 or the holley strip 300-25 are some of the best out the box intakes..the hurrican intake from pro products is up there also but theres been alot of people as of late having problems with the castings.
if your going to get your intake ported then just get a super vic jr if it fits your application an for what you are doing..but a super vic needs port work to run with the 3 above intakes i posted..once ported it will out shine them even if they are ported also..
