My understanding is the 8" stuff wont be built to stall at the low point the OP is asking for.

If I were in the market for a 4200+stall track only unit I would probably call ATI for an 8", but not for a street car where you want lockup and like I said I am pretty sure they don't make 8" in stalls down below 4000.

He says you lose top-end efficiency and you lose strength. He said it's way easier to do it that way though, which is why some companies can sell you a brand new converter on ebay for $400-$500 which stalls at 4000rpm. My local guy welds every fin and then adjusts the stator to give the car the correct stall. Everything is welded and brazed. He also told me the weight difference between an 8" and a 10" is quite a lot, which gives the car the "flywheel effect", ie it will rev a little quicker. Kinda like going from a heavy flywheel to a aluminum one.
Yeppp... after talking to my converter guy, I had no problem shelling out 1k bucks for it after he explained all the processes in building it. It actually makes me wonder how companies can offer free restalls? Some time consuming **** if they're doing everything "correctly." Like SS MPSTR said, gotta pay to play. Unfortunately this is an LT1 forum on the internet, and the "cheaper is better" motto applies here.

That said... get an ebay unit. It stalls to 4500 at WOT, I can cruise it unlocked at 1500 rpm, it has 99% efficiency on the top end, the lockup clutch is rated to 1200 hp, and it was only $300

Excuse my ignorance but the ATI/Coan etc. 8" converters do not come with a lockup feature I presume?

no. from what i understand, lock up converters must be built from an existing lockup gm core, which only goes down to about 9" i think? I wouldn't try to get a 9" converter to go more than 4500 like joelster said, the efficiency goes out the window. Plus, if you really want to go fast, you don't wanna a heavy lockup in your converter anyways.

Thanks for explaining...Since I have a street car I will just have to stay with the 10" lockup converters for now.

Running a vig 3500 on my DD...it feels tighter on street than my old midwest 2800......and hits hard as hell when throttle is hammered.
