Angry Help! my walet and my sanity can't take anymore.

So I have a LT1 383 in my 95 Trans am. I was doing a burn out and now my car is making a ticking sound, kinda like a lifter. I took the cam out and it had been scorred from what looks like heat and friction. I replaced the lifters and cam. I still have my 1.5 Roller rocker arms. Oil pressure is fine. Put it all together and it is still making the same noise. so I pulled of the oil pan to listen for a Spun rod bearing and couldn't find anything.

It makes the noise the Loudest when I am acutally driving it and put the engine under zero load. oh and it only makes the noise when the car is hot. And there are no drivability issues with this noise ie sputtering or missfireing... Any ideas will help.

Thanks.

I'm betting on a exhaust leak. I had the same thing happen a while back. Here is a video of what my leak sounded like. Hope this helps.

Its not the noise of an exhaust leak. Its more of a rattling noise. its almost like a heavy engine ping. It sounds so much like a loose rocker arm but I just replaced them all. Just an idea but is it possible that something could cause a lifter to stick only when its hot? even though I just put new ones in? Could something be wrong with my oil pump that even though it says I have enough oil pressure could I not be getting enough oil to all the lifters?

Take your car to an exhaust shop. Get the car up in the air and tell them to find out if it's a rattle or tick from the exhaust. You'd be surprised how much exhaust noises can sound like valvetrain issues.

FIrst you need to post up a video of the sound.

2- are you really running a 383 with stock rocker arms?

3- why would you replace the cam, lifters?

4- did you have the oil pan off the engine and actually ran it to listen for grinding noises?

5- what exacly have you done to find this wierd noise?

I have 30# injectors and you can hear them ticking as well as my rockers when mine is running hot or cold. But I agree with these guys, it might be exhaust leak. Or maybe it is lifter noise. What weight oil are you running?

ok after doing the burnout the ticking noise started so I began to tear into it. I found that teh cam lobes looked scoured. Since I was getting a new cam I figured it didn't hurt to get a new set of lifters to go with it. I got it all in and back together and fired it up yesterday. To my dispare I found that my engine was still making the same noise. Just minutes ago I pulled of the valve covers while running and I have no oil coming out of the rocker arms. When putting it together I installed a new oil Filter and 20w50 oil. according to my mechanical oil pressure gauge my oil presure is between 40-50 when cold and 20-30 when hot. Any ideas on why I wouldn't be getting oil to the lifters?

Oh and the cam bearings are fine they are all in the same possition with nothing worn. The old cam only had the lobes worn the journals where the cam bearings go were nice and clean.

How long did you wait to see oil coming out of the pushrods? Did you soak the new lifters in oil before you installed them?

I didn't soak the lifters in oil before I installed them but shouldn't there be oil in them by now? Honestly, I let the car run for about 2 min .

I would let it run for a few more mins and check the rockers for oil again. sometimes it can take longer than 2 mins for oil to reach all of the rockers, but it should be atleast oiling a few by now. You're saying none of the rockers are getting oil?

That's not a good sign.

Was that engine built to run 20w50? Seems way too heavy. To Me it seems like a lifter tick. My opinion is that that weight of oil is too much for the stock oil pump and clearances to make it to the top of the engine at idle speed. Ever thought of trying 10w 30 to see what happens?

pillarpod: I cant take a video of the noise because it only does it while I am driving.

Black1997T/A: Your Idea is probably the simplest thing I can try.

ss.slp.ls1: I'm not really worried about what kind of work I have to put into this B#$%@ I just want to get it working properly. I have plenty of time and room to work on it so if the motor has to some out then, so be it.
