Default cut my muffler off

i have a 95 lt1 stock with cold air intake, i cut my muffler off last night, i love the sound of it, but i feel like i may have lost some hp!! does having no muffler cause you to lose hp since i guess there is less backpressure? i still have a cat on it.

Why didn't you just get a full exhaust set up? Add power, and sounds great...The best of both worlds.

exactly what is was thinking

my z28 had no muffler when i bought it, it sounded like a$$. and had no bottom end (torque).

with no muffler you lose back pressure, in turn, losing torque.

i got lucky and scored a flowmaster for $30 bucks and put it on and got the bottom end back.. car ran alot better with a muffler on it, and it didnt sound like a damned old grain truck.

Unless your cammed, it sounds like ***. Like these redneck trucks we have all over south Georgia with straight pipes. I hate it. They make a shitload of noise, and it takes the vehicle forever to get to 30 mph.

I fail to see how this is different than having an open cutout. If there's still a cat it probably sounds fine. Now totally open, I will agree sounds like *** except for at WOT and idle. Especially with open headers, dear god the drone is something not of this world. On the power subject, no you didn't loose anything.

Agreed, both counts. Running an exhaust that has cats and is y-piped without a muffler should sound pretty good, all be it very, very loud. Saying you lost power due to less backpressure sounds like red-neck engineering all the way, back pressure doesn't help anything in an ehxaust system. Removing the muffler may have changed the resonance and scavanging characteristics and you likely shifted some power away from the lower rpms into the top-end.
