Seal question

Seal question There is a seal on the timming cover for the water pump shaft....i have replaced it 6 times and it still leaks!!! I have tried several different way to put it on, but it either rips or goes for a while (a few miles) then starts leaking again! any ideas on how to put it on so it doesn't strech or rip??
Electric tape the gear and get a socket to put it on. 6 times and it still leaks.....must be doing something wrong. It's a seal you drive into place. Is it leaking out the shaft or from around the seal/timing cover?

it is leaking around the shaft and the seal. granted a few of those riped going on. i have had 3 that have leaked on the car. the ID is alot smaller than the OD on the shaft and everytime i put the seal on it rips or streches out to the point that it wont seal.

I used a deep well socket. I think I warmed the seal up with a hair dryer and boiling water to get it onto the socket, placed the socket over the shaft, slid the seal onto the shaft and then drove it into place. A lot of people use a sharpie pen.

That's a nice, entertaining thread. That opti seal is huge in comparison to what's on my '94.
I also oiled up the deep well socket I used during installation. I've heard that seal is supposed to go on dry. I don't know whether that's true, but mine didn't leak.

I just kept on stretching the seal a little bit at a time with increasing diameter sockets. Once its stretched enough, I used the water pump coupler (cleaned it up with steel wool first), slid the seal on that and then slid the coupler/seal in place and tapped the seal on. I used a bit of oil and I haven't noticed any leaking.

Yeah, but proper tools make it so much faster and easier
