Question engine light on, can't get a code

I bought a 95 camaro z28 with a lt1 engine. The engine light wasn't on when I bought it, got it inspected and after that it came on.

It has been on ever since, I have checked the fuses and none are bad. I tried scanning the aldl and can't get a reading. Any suggestions?

Do you have the correct version? 95s use an OBDII connector - a hybrid year requiring a special scanner or careful jumping of terminal pins.

You bought an OBDII scanner. Your car has OBDI. Hope you saved the receipt.

Question

I got another auto scanner. It is a Actron Code Scanner CP9001. Will this work? There are three pins, which ones do I use?

That one won't work either. That is a fancy paperclip, nothing more, used for jumping the pins and flashing the codes on the dash. You can only do that on 93s.

Honestly, for us 95s, I think the best thing to do is to pick up an AKM cable (www.akmcables.com) and use some free scanning software (Datamaster, Freescan, etc.). Those programs will tell you far more than your typical code-reader.

Is there a certain scanner you would suggest i get? I would love to do it your way but I don't own a laptop to use the scanning software to hook up to the car. I don't have anyone I could borrow one from either.

I just really want to get my car on the road. If anybody has suggestions please let me know!!!

Normally only if it is OBD-II, which his is not.

An Actron CP9145 does OBD-I and II. Many people with 1995s use it.

Okay so I spent two weeks trying to get the Super Auto Scanner CP9145. Went everywhere; paid for it at AutoZone, ordered it three times and everytime it got cancelled.

I got a refund and the guy finally decided to tell me that CP9145 was recalled and instead gave me CP9185 which is apparently the replacement for CP9145. I hope it works.
