Wish you were closer to the west coast :-)

OP
while tuning may not be 'rocket science" there is certainly a learning curve and $ investment (software & dyno time) and a good possibility for some painfull lessons along the way. my $02 is have someone experienced do it.
383 build a mail order will get you close if not spot on. Buy some scan software and log some runs and send file to tuner for any possible adjustments.

I suppose we could all just throw a carburetor on the engine and go just as fast, or faster, without EFI

On your way to Sac, consider stopping by Fresno and check out All Out Performance the owner's name is Nate and he's very well known. He used to work at Fresno Performance but recently quit and opened a shop of his own.
Here's the link: http://www.fresnoperformance.net/
From the forums: http://www.cencalracing.com/sponsor-...ates-shop.html
you may want to consider taking a look and giving him a call. He is a really busy guy
so he might not answer just leave a voicemail or like i said, swing by and check it out.
If you do end up going to check it out, instead of taking the I-5, take the 99 route, it's only a 10 min difference heading from socal to sac.

If you're looking for a mail order tune, check out Solomon Kostelnik at lt1pcmtuning.com. He's got several mail order options that take most of the hassle and the donkeywork out of tuning. He's helped me out a whole bunch just via email even though I was doing all my tuning myself. I highly recommend him. He knows his stuff.
