Here's another possible explanation. When its hot enough to need the A/C, in addition to the A/C robbing power, its also hot outside, which robs significantly more power than the A/C probably does. With the current temperature today in Virginia set a 100 deg. F. I'm pretty sure my car wouldn't be putting down the type of power it does when its 70 or 50 degrees outside. Just something else to consider.

25HP? maybe, - I would say 15 max or less, take the belt off. that compressor is not very hard to turn.

when you do that the clutch is not engaged. engage it and get the compressor pressurizing the system and it takes a good bit of effort to turn

It takes nowhere near 25hp to turn at low rpm's.
