Default Engine performance and tuning when the AC is on

My engine runs beautifully all of the time. Nice and smooth, BLMs are excellent, yada, yada ,yada.

When I turn on my AC, it has a noticable impact on the motor. You can hear and feel it bog the motor down a bit and it just has a rougher overall sound and feel. It is not causing any significant issues that make me worry. Its just more of an annoyance.

The AC works great so i dont think this is an issue with the compressor. I also have a ASP underdrive pulley if it matters.

Is there anything in the tune that should be "tweaked" for AC on conditions? Or is this just normal?

it normal for engine to loose couple hp for ac hehe. You have 2 choice

Roll both window down and sweet like a **** and no loose hp on engine
put window up and turn ac on, cool make your body happy, and loose couple hp

I like my window down hehe.

I am not at all concerned with the power losses. I just want to ensure that it runs as "optimized" with the AC on as it does with the AC off. Does anything in the tune reference the AC?

I seriously doubt it.

What you feel is the increased drag from the compressor clutch engaging, which puts more load on an idling engine with no throttle input, so it's more noticable. I'm 99.8% sure what you are experiencing is completely normal.

Your engine runs the exact same way with the AC on or off. The added drag of the compressor robs power - standard automotive physics.

My Chevy Equinox beater does the same thing.

The compressor requires approx. 25 HP from the engine to turn, so you're gonna feel it no matter what.

Off topic, how often do you require to turn the ac on, i heard you have to turn on one in a while to keep the seal lube, or else it will be dry and start leak. I just wonder hehe

Their are several tables you can adjust involving your a/c, mainly how much your IAC will increase with the compressor on.

If yours is bogging when it kicks on and not off, you could try increasing the tables a hair to see if it goes away. A little decrease in idle speed is normal, but if its stumbling things might need adjusted.

I am conviced this is not true on mine and I can explain why.

When I turn the AC on, the ACP on my dtatmaster shoots up. When I turn it off, it quickly drops.

No go drive with the AC on. Go WOT and you would expec the ACP to drop like a rock. It does not and I can not feel in disengagement of the AC clutch.

thats not right. i believe its anything over 80% throttle and the clutch will disengage.. could be something stupid like your throttle position sensor. or just a bad wire somewhere...

I am going to look into it some more. I think the IAC is good because position and voltage are registering normal on the datalogger plus I dont have any codes. I might have to break out a wiring diagram too.

You can adjust when the a/c compressor kicks off (vs tp %) I think stock is near 93% or so, could be yours was adjusted in the tune.

At least every couple of weeks, even in winter. Running it on defrost during winter is sufficient, as this runs the compressor to dry out the air before it hits the windshield.

If your compressor is causing enough drag for you to be able to feel it disengage at WOT you have problems.

When I have driven smaller cars, like ricers, I could feel the AC kick in and out. I guess I assumed I could feel the same with the Camaro.

Again I cant feel any engagement or disengagement so it would seem from what you are saying, things are fine other than the possible WOT disengagement.

Okay I loked at the tune and the AC clutch disable was set to 99.6% throttle position so no wonder it would notmkick out. Clearly this does not seem right. I set it at 80% but I have yet to test drive it. Seems like it should help.

80% should be fine, glad you found the problem.
