Is a yank pt4400 to big for a stock lt1? all opinions wanted.

Depends on your definition of too big. Is this car a DD? Or a stripped-out dedicated track-only shell of a car? In any case, probably.

 

being serious? he dds it. but would it be that bad? i have no clue about lt1's.

 

The lt1 has a lower torque peek than a ls1 so it doesnt need as loose of a converter. I would get a ss4000.

A 4000 is as big as I would go for a stock LT1 DD. A 3500 is probably a better choice.

 

Thats what i thought. What would justify a 4400 stall tho?

 

a light car with gear and spinning 7000rms would need a pt4400.

 

I would rock it! It's not like those converters are loose. Just cruising around it would behave like stock.

 

what are the pros and cons of going with it?

I'd say get a 3600 for a stockish car. I want to restall up to 36-3800 in mine. I'm already on my second stall.

 

PT series will not feel like the tighter street SS series of stalls, I would not do it. He will probably end up pulling it to sell it after a while.

There is a huge difference between an SS4000 and a PT4400. In an NA 1/8th mile car with a lot of gear it would be fine...but not a DD. He will eventually hate driving it.

Honestly I DD'd a 3200 in a bolt-on LT1 and kept it when I went H/C and loved it even though a lot of people online said it was too small. Just to show how opinionated a topic it is, the shop that tuned my car said 3200 is on the big side for a DD LT1...the exact opposite of what many people say on forums.

Remember that he is peaking at barely over 5k rpms in a stock LT1. A 4.4K converter is a lot of stall for that power curve, and he will be missing out on a lot of the low end tq the engines are known for.

 

I'd wait until you do at least a cam, or heads and cam to do a converter and have it matched to your comob. Any stall worth having would pass up a lot of the stock LT1's torque curve. My friend had a no name 2400 stall in his car, and it felt really nice on the street. I had a Vig 3200 (flashed around 4000) and it was way to big for the stock motor.

 

yes its way too big. stock he should be looking in the area of a 3K.

 

im the other end of the spectrum. I had a yank super street fighter 3500 behind a 383 and thought I should have gone bigger. when I later built a cammed 350 with stock heads I picked up a PT4000 out of an LS1 vette for a good price and I absolutely loved it even with the 2.73s I initially had, with 4.10s it was downright nasty. however that car had a 242/250 cam and revved to almost 7000 rpm.

if he can get it cheap and doesn't mind the work of installing it and uninstalling it if he doesn't like it I say get it. the only way anyone will ever know if they like a stall is to drive it.
