Default drill the thermostat ?

Today I replace the new thermostat, with stant super stat, I took my old one off and I saw it have 2 hole ( look like some one drill it ). After I put new stat in, I saw it running hotter then the old one that have drill hole on it.

Idle Old 200 after 15min or 20 min
Idle New 215 after 15min or 20 min

Cruising Old 170-180
Cruising New 190-193

it its different, should I drill the new one with hole ? any one done drill mod on thermostat ? btw I change out the old thermostat cause the seal is leak around the thermostat housing.

You most likely have a traditional SBC t-stat. You need one specific for reverse cooling.

Considering the fans are not programmed to even come on until 226°, you are fine. Don't drill any holes. And yes, it does sound like you might have had a 160° thermostat in there before. The thermostat has a marking on it somwhere, telling you the temp rating.

Hey:

Good till 230+ or so with that Tstat. I would go with a 160*
Tstat and get a tune for the fans to come on at 195* because of where you live.

I got hypertech tune the fan on at 160, but I dont like how my fan keep kick on all the time, I already just sold the hypertech yesterday.

btw if i make my engiine run cooler, will it increase engine life ? I mean if I leave the way its now, will it be ok for engine life ? hehe I want this engine last a long as possible.

Most Likely it will last longer @ a lower temp. Hence the reason for the choice of a 160* in warmer climates.

Hey:

Autozone, NAPA, Advanced or OReilys take your pick, give em a try just make sure it looks exactly like the one you have.

Hey:

Just a guess, but a T stat should be good from 1-5 yrs easy as long as you keep fresh clean coolant in it, maybe longer. I never changed the one in my Caprice ever, never needed to and it has been 200,000+ miles and 16 years old.

Just the way it is, the law of supply and demand, 160* popular, 180* not so much.

Do you NEED to change a thermostat from stock one if you just hypertech program the fan to come on at 160/180 ?

Hey:

The fans will be running all the time, and will not last as long that way. Why not just put in a cooler stat, and turn the fans up to turn on, when you really need them while stopped. While in motion with the air damn in place it cools it pretty good without them running.
