you think thats hard? try swapping a f/i v6 to a f/i v8. worst case scenario: take it to a mechanic. either way, it'll be worth it in the end but 1 year is way too damn long.

I understand where you're coming from. I started an auto to manual swap on my 85 with no garage in late September. Didn't finish it before it got cold, car sat for 8 months before I made time to work on it again. I finally got it done about 2 weeks after the trans went in my 95. Then it sat for almost a year before I even started on it. That one only took me a week to do, though, including the time the shop had it to rebuild.

When you finally make the time, and finish it, you'll be glad you did.

As already said, you have to dive into it and forget all the fears and frustrations of what it looks like. The only way it's going to get done is if you do it. Not sure how old you are, but as I'm getting older I'm starting to feel the same way when it comes to working on my ****. Hell, it took me 6 months to do a simple clutch install and another 4 to swap out head gaskets.
You just have to be careful because when feeling frustrated like this. There may be a tendency to overlook simple stuff that can bite you in the *** later.

Over a year? $300x12=$3600. What does a shop usually charge, 1/3rd of that for install and a tune?

Get it done you are bleeding funds! You didn't at least put your insurance into storage mode, or does NY not offer that? I haven't driven my Silverado in about 8 months now, and like an idiot I was paying regular insurance on it. USAA informed me the other day while getting a quote that I could put it on storage status and not be paying this huge amount on my old unsafe vehicle(saves me $30 a month).

I have to agree with this. I just do better work when I'm alone. I don't like to feel rushed. Either way, the amount of money you're paying for rent on a garage you could have payed someone to do it 3 or 4 times. Get to it and quit being a beaver.

Oh, I see. Your trying to be sneaky, bolt-ons now include a cam. I will have to bring more to the table for that Dallas North Tollway race

Oh no no, if I did have a cam I wouldn't have two leaking valve guides. The next step are a complete valvetrain redo.
You'd rather spend money on the interior anyway

So 97slow, is this why we haven't seen you at Bellmore or OBI Sunday mornings? Is that you leaning over the fender in your avatar?

ive never had that problem working on v8 rwd vehicles. fwd is whole nother story
you would have probably saved tons of $, time and frustration if you would have paid someone who knows what they are doing to install for you. from the beginning.
after you bolt it back together, you will still need to get tuned and up and running correct.

Lol, your right. I've spent too much money on the interior , but that won't stop me from showing up prepared

Now that I've whored the OP's thread I will return it intact......

Took me a year to get my car back together when I finally decided to build the motor. Seemed like it was going to be forever, but once it fires up you'll really be proud of yourself and happy about getting it right again. This really shouldn't have taken more than a couple weekends. Is this your first project?

You just need the right mindset, I spent almost 2 months on my cam swap over the winter because I was the same way, thinking how much there was to do, when there really isn't (this was the most I've ever done to any engine). Set aside a weekend or two and concentrate on one aspect at a time. I would set goals such as loosening the oil pan and removing the timing cover; I wouldn't finish for the day until I got that far for example.

It all pays off when you crank the car up and it fires up on the first crank...

Time to either find some motivation and get to it, or stop wasting money on a garage and take it to a mechanic. You're less than halfway done. A tow and labor costs would probably be cheaper than another year worth of garage rental.

I just did longtubes, opti and waterpump. It was a real pain at times and took twice the time I thought, but when I just buckled down and worked on it I made good progress. Set small goals and check them off one after another.
