Default need ideas 93 trans am

Needs a ignition key, the idiot who owns this car lost the key and now needs one. The dealer told him 500 to replace the key. I never told him to go there nor do I know if this is true. Im asking because I might buy this car and I would like to know what can I do for a replacement key considering he dont have one? I thought of taking the lock cylinder to a locksmith and have him re key one. Then I thought that I already have a lock cylinder with a key, that I could just put in there and call it the day. But what are other options! I just got word on this today and if I can I will try and pick this car up soon.

I bought my camaro without a key and the dealer made me another one for like $35 off the vin. I just had to prove I owned the car. It's a 94 if that matters.

most GM dealers can only access Vin based key codes for 10 years. After that they get dropped out of the computer system. (at least they used to). I would get a chip burned that has vats deleted, then just go buy a lock cyl and key. IIRC, just about any GM lock cyl should work in the column, so you really don't have to worry about anything after that.

That's what I'd do....

Ya I figured he was lying about that 500 bux pricetag. But im not sure and hadnt bought a key in about 7 years. Im just trying to figure this out before I get the car. If I can get a key before I buy the car it would be awesome to pay the kid and start the car up an drive away,

The car does run, the idiot lost the key. I know the person who is selling the car indirectly.

Have somebody on a GM dealer tell you what the VATS number is, for that they will need cars VIN, based on that get the equivalent resitor value, or make one with the nominal value and bypass the security system. Then the car will start with any replacement key cylinder.

A regular old style GM switch will work with some light modification if you need to change the lock and want to bypass the vats. I needed a new switch for my old v6 car and vats was already bypassed. If I remember right, I just needed to widen the notch some where the lock screw thing holds it into the column. Accessory position didnt work right after that, I think with more massaging with a drill on the lock woulda taken care of it but I just needed the car to start at the time lol. If you go that route, just slide the switch in and you will see what you need to do to make it work. It'll be pretty obvious.

I had a key made for my 94 TA at the local dealer. It cost me a whole $30. Just take your VIN in, they should still be able to look it up. If it helps, I can try and ask my buddy at the local dealer to make sure that they can still do it from the vin for ya. It'd have to be tomorrow though.

End thread. I did the same thing for my 93 when someone stole the keys. I went to the dealership and they made a key. It isn't a difficult process.

I'm a lockmith on the side. I charge 140 for card keys. I come out test for resistance the rear the ignition and cut the key. It can be replaced with an ignition that has the diagonal slot for the bolt inside the column that holds the ignition in. buy sometimes the dealer will cut a key if you own the vehicle. Also the 500 price tag would be for two ing keys and two door keys. Not necessary to have two sets. You can get a locksmith to read working key cats value (2-15); will almost never be a one unless the ing has been replaced previously which in my case that's is how mine was, and then the locksmith can just duplicate a second set for you.

Sorry for the ramble but hope this helps.
