I have personally never had an opti fail, but I am afraid of puddles and any car washes that clean the undercarriage. lol I have had mine missfire for ten miles after driving through a deep puddle. (Doesn't help that my car sits on the ground.) I agree that the opti gets blamed for far more than it should be, but I still see a need for a better part....whether you are talking GM, MSD, Ebay, Autozone, Advance, Chandler, Dynaspark, or whoever.....they all have a track record of being only somewhat reliable at best. Even the guys on here who swear by their opti usually keep a spare.

not as of right now, holidays + work + my car needing some attention is taking time away from this project. I've been putting a lot of spare time into the PCM mods right now actually, it looks very promising. As Puck mentioned earlier, the PCM plus opti delete would be a great combo. Right now I have all the pieces together, just need to set up a testing rig on the bench. I'll bump this thread when I have some good info + pics.
I was thinking of how you were going to set up an optical sensor and though right away of a crank trigger esque setup. There's lots of existing parts out there. I will be interested to see what parts you're sourcing to put this together.

There will be a smaller 8x reluctor in the opti, for the low res signal. With improved EMI shielding for those really pushing the amps through the distributor portion. The signal conditioning for the 180x VR is giving me some frustration right now, I like dabbling in electronics but I'm not an expert. I do not believe a keyed crank hub will be necessary for the crank trigger setup as long as there is a good friction fit and the crank bolt is properly torqued. LS1 Tech Stories

When/If someone comes up with an inexpensive, relatively easy to install and RELIABLE optispark solution, I'll ditch my LS1 and go back to the world of LT1. I'm no engineer so I have no idea what it would take to do it, but it seems that the demand would be great enough to come up with an decent option - isn't that what capitalism is all about?

Wicked, i hope that something comes of this soon. Also, i wouldnt just rely on a properly torqued bolt to keep the crank trigger in line. its easy enough to get a woodruff key and install it. The added peace of mind would be worth it IMO

i made a few changes to the design, i needed to change the tooth design on the crank reluctor to get a better waveform. That was an expensive learning experience

Keep trying! Any idea on pricing? The EFI connection 24x stuff is just ridiculous to me. I need everything to convert to that, and it would put me $2000 in the hole, easy. With your setup I could keep my pcm, wiring harness, etc, etc.
