Default TH400 Swap

Im going to swapping out my built 60e for a TH400 this winter.

What all will need to be changed? I know the basics like DS, crossmember, etc...

Will my SFI 153 tooth flexplate still work for the 400 converter pattern? Do I just use a standard SBC converter? And will the trans bolt right up to the LT1 block?

Thanks guys.

Gonna be fun launching off a brake with my 28" ET drags

im doing the same thing this winter too lol..........trying to sell my 60e and converter except im going with a built rossler th350 in mine.......that way i can still use my driveshaft and crossmember all i gotta change is my shifter.....and i agree i cant wait to let go of that brake button at 5000 with my foot on the mat lol its OTB time!!! lol

and to answer a couple of those questions......yes the th400 will bolt right up to the block........the converter pattern should remain the same........and yes you gonna be looking for a sbc converter....

Thanks.

I am using a UMI relocation x member.

The guy who is building my trans is also building my converter, just wanted to get an idea of what he was making me. He is a well-known builder in my area and has a handful of 7sec grudge cars running his stuff. He makes his own billet covers for the converters, etc.

So all I will really need is a dipstick, and a shifter w/ linkage and then figure out how to get my speedo to work

EDIT: i already have a B&M 70274 stacked plate cooler with 3/8" lines so i should be set there too

You will not regret the swap - I just did it. Looking forward to a few more suspension tweaks, and then off to the track.

just slot and reuse the stock crossmember and space the trans up. I'd use at least a -6 line for the cooler, the pressure and heat you'll be generating on the brake will be pretty high. Have a leaky fitting or split a line and you're into the wall and/or on fire. Get a madman dipstick, they're perfect. Instead of getting the full trans shield, I just got a flexplate shield and a yet to install blanket. *Should* be easier to install and will still pass tech. For the speedo just plug in to a front abs sensor.

Rossler is local to where I grew up. Lot's of local guys run his stuff. I visited his shop a few months back, he's a cool guy with a real nice shop. Make sure you ask for a T-shirt

Thanks a lot guys, should be pretty straightforward it seems like. Does the trans physically fit into the tunnel OK? or does it require modification like an 80e does?

Rundown of what I am planning:

-UMI crossmember (I have a full length T/A, need it to mount to)
-race built TH400 with billet trans brake RVMB
-billet converter built to spec (somewhere in the 4500 range)

-driveshaft? (no idea what I need)
-Shifter? any suggestions?

EDIT: thanks ramair, that link helped

Longer DS will be necessary. I got mine from Strange - CM 3.5" unit.

I talked to a lot of guys about shifters, and the name that kept coming up was the Turbo Action Cheetah. Nice shifter, and glad I made the choice.

I didn't have to modify the tunnel for my 4L80e. I setup my B&M mega shifter to fit in the stock shifter console, almost looks factory.

No tunnel mods, I posted in the auto trans section with how long my driveshaft ended up measuring just for reference. I did a 3" CM from a local shop, turned out pretty nice. The cheetah is a great unit. For some reason I like ratchet shifters, some don't, but my stealth pro ratchet is a sick piece for sure.

I did this swap and I used a sbc converter/stock flex plate. I had to get some bushings and bolts and part of the cross member off of a third gen v6 camaro to make the crossmember kit that i bought work. The parts were discontinued from GM. It bolts right up. No problem. Oh yea the brake is a lotta fun.

Two words...over drive.

I seem to be doing just fine with my 4L60E and foot-braking.

yeah I know. I have a built 60e right now and am doing just fine with it too maybe its just the Ai stuff tho... lol

not even talking a strength aspect and putting the brake aside - the gear ratios in the 400 would help both of us out over the steep 1st gear in the 60e.

I bet your times (and mine too) would come down from swapping to a th400

EDIT: I think i'd rather actually have a lockup converter before an OD, but both are really nice to have that I am probably going to miss at some point

yea my main issue is i cant get the right converter into the car.......im running a 9.5" lockup converter at a 4800 stall which isn't high enough and is wayyyyy out of its efficency range at that stall..........with the th350 im loosing weight gaining the tbrake and having the ability to run an 8" race converter......

good point. It takes a lot of work to get the converter dead on. Can make a big difference in how the car et's with the perfect converter for the setup.

I am also going to be going with an 8" converter, just as long as it can handle a shot and not blow through it.

Do you know what you are planning on doing for a shifter? I definately want an aftermarlet ratchet shifter, just dont know what brand is best
