AI 385 LT1 Motor Re-Build Thread....PICS/VIDEO!!!

I'd sure like to have a 4L80E with a manual valve body and nice stall to replace the TH400 / 5,500 8" in my 61. I have dreams of being street worthy again one day (but still capable of the same times.)

wow I dont even want to argue the whole first gear ratio thing, im not even going to open that can of worms. Its not like your car is low on power/torque where it cant handle it. It makes enought power where that it doesnt need such a low gear to get off the line.
1961: I'm not talking a glide here, never said anything about them. There is a big difference between a glide and talking a 2.48 th400 gear I dont know many glide users in a 4th gen and most are very very very light, and even then you need to have the converter spot on to really benefit
hey I wish ya luck with the 60e and I understand if you dont want to change it because you already have it and why fix whats not broke, etc. But dont try to make the argument that you wont benefit from a TH350/400... because we both know that there is benefit to be had

yes I agree 100% and I understand that. But he said he wanted the 3.08 gear, and that left me scratching my head.

Less 1st gear is only an advantage when you are extremely light and/or have traction problems to my knowledge. Way too many people think they need a 1.76 or 1.82 geared PG just because that is what so many "real" race cars use. LOL Personally, I wouldn't run the 60e because I don't know anyone that can build one to last like the OP's....not that I can afford anyway.
That would put him right back to a 2.48 first gear.

Some day i may swap in a th350 with a 2.78 first to see what happens but in the mean time i think this 4.60e will offer some good results while still allowing me to cruise around here and there with it......
i agree on the converter but I can get an ATI 8" race converter for it i just loose my lockup for the street.......hopefully this 5300 (even though its out of its efficency range) will keep it above 6500 for the whole duration down the track

thanks for all the info too guys...........i dont take any of it in a bad way trust me.......im always open to opinions and info of things that other people have tried........im not in anyway saying that a th350 wouldn't pick the car up but i do like my overdrive and lockup ............
hopefully gonna fire this thing up later this week

IMO the cruisability of a car depends more on the converter than it does on whether or not the car has overdrive. I have a loose 5200rpm converter which makes my car scream on the highway. It's fine around town but hardly driveable on the interstate. If I swap to my tight converter which stalls just over 4000, i'm just putting along at 65mph. The car behaves very well. It seems to carry each gear an extra 10mph or so.

actully no........it was an ignition issue with the opti........it was misfiring not being lean.....i tracked it down to the cap and rotor.....the reason the pipe started glowing was because of the unburnt fuel in the pipe that was burning...........should be good now i rebuilt the whole damn motor and electrical system lol
