Anyone with a boosted or high compression engine that runs 87 octane deserves to blow it up. The cost difference between premium or mid grade compared to the bottom of the barrel cheap crap is minimal and the improved performance and mileage make up for the cost difference.
If you skimp on your fuel, you might as well run the cheap walmart oil as well.

the guys that are making such a big deal out of putting 87 in the trans am need to stop over-reacting in my opinion. We are not in the world of carburetors here, our engines come equipped with knock sensors, and have the ability to pull enough timing so that the engine will run fine on 87 octane, you will just miss out on a ton of power and efficiency in the process. Despite the popular belief around here, the engine wont explode in a million pieces at the first drop of 87 octane the engine burns.
The OP stated that the trans am is in storage and gets started every once in a while. This is perfectly fine, an engine just idling sees hardly any cylinder pressure, the best chance for detonation is low rpm and high cylinder pressure, neither of which will happen when a car is idling.
The owners manual even says that while 91+ octane is preferred, its still fine with 89 or 87, it specifically says that 89 and 87 are allowed the car just wont accelerate as well.
The point of my post is that the OP doesn't have to lose sleep over this, he doesn't need to hot wire his fuel pump to drain his tank, he doesn't need to put a dozen cans of octane booster in his tank, and he doesn't need to jump off a cliff or slit his dads throat. All he has to do is continue to start his car up from time to time and by the time spring rolls around all he needs to do is top it off with the highest octane he can find and let her rip

Not all of the nossles are bigger than a gas nossle is, at least in my area. Most of the diesel pumps that are right next to gas pumps here are the same size. The bigger ones are usually at the major gas stations where Semi's can fuel up.
