Default Hi-power, SMOG legal LT1/LT4

Looking for tried and true hi-power, smog legal LT1 combinations. If you have a 370+ LT1, please list your set-up. Looking to put one in a 1987 Monte Carlo SS that MUST pass CA State emissions testing. Thanks for your time.

Call up LE or AI and tell them you want max hp while being smog legal. I agree with greg, spray it, also if you call le or ai tell them you want to spray it if you choose to do so. What is your setup now?

If you are talking 370+ N/A flywheel hp then Lingenfelter heads with their 211/219 cam should get you ~350rhwp with stock exhaust and will pass a sniffer just as clean as stock as long as its tuned correctly.

The setup I have now is from a 1996 Impala SS. All stock. I was trying to add to the stock engine, without doing a complete teardown/rebuild if I didn't have to. The vehicle will not be raced or anything, just looking to do a different swap. My first choice was a 383 with a polished TPI intake. Then I got a killer deal on the 96 LT1 and 4L60 trans with 69k miles.

Nitrous...well, is not an option at this point.

350rwhp will work. Looking for a stout, smog-legal, daily driver combo. Do you have experience/results with the setup you just recommended?

No one mentioned LT4 stuff yet? Is it not worth it? Is 370+hp not attainable with a LT4 intake and heads?

I'd leave the engine alone and put a mild, smog legal supercharger kit on it. Maybe some water/meth injection since all you get is **** gas out there.

Good point! Especially since 91 octane is now $4.03/gal.

I ran a stock bottom end LT1 in my 96 B-body putting 350HP/351TQ to the wheels all smog legal with a very small custom grind cam 212/216 IIRC, ported/polished 2.02/1.60 AL heads with 30 lb SVO and 52mm ported stock TB.

I now have a 383 with same heads and a COMP 416 cam making 385hp/390TQ to the wheels. Both motors through Edelbrock shorty headers CATS & 2.5" exhaust.

The Ed Wright tune for both played a large part in smog compliance.

The Lingenfelter 211/219 cam would be a good choice or a cam from LE or AI with corresponding heads.

A simple upgrade to a stock iron head motor would be to run a Crane 227 cam with 1:5 RR and 10309-1 spring kit

I ran a LPE 211/219 cam with their ported heads/intake for years. With stock exhaust the car put down 350/350 and ran a best of 12.67 @ 110 with stock gears, 26" DR's and a 3750lb race weight. I went to long tubes and it made 370rwhp and 350rwtq and ran a best of 12.09 @ 115.5 with 3.73 gears at 26" ET Streets at the same race weight. Car drove just like stock. Only gripe I had is the cam really doesn't have a alot of lope.

LT4 stuff isn't worth it unless you are wanting serious port work for a large cam. For what you are asking LT1 heads/intake will do just fine.

What rpm do they do the CA sniffer test at? If it's just at idle, maybe a small turbo setup would work for you. Go mild on the cam to run clean.

I got my cam spec'd by Lloyd Elliott (LE) for Emissions in my 355 build. I know your emissions are strict but how much more i dont know. Im running his 223/230 .565/.565 112lsa cam which is ment to pass emissions with a set of ported AFR 190cc heads and 11:1scr. Im going through an M6 and should be in the 400wrhp range. I were an auto car i would probubly see in the 370-380rwhp range. If your emissions are stricter then mine here i would go for something smaller or have it made on a 114lsa to help pass the sniffer.

Yeah, we SMOG at 2000-2500 rpm, I believe.

That cam passes SMOG? I'll get the car SMOG'd out there where you are then!
I'm not looking to race or be the baddest, I just want more than the stock 190hp 305 will put out. I want a swap with a little edge on performance. 1hp per cubic inch would be ideal for this Monte...

I forgot to mention the LT's hp and ET's were done with an off road y-pipe as well. If you are seeking an emissions friendly setup I would suggest going long tubes off the bat and getting two y-pipes- one with cats and one w/out. That way when you need to pass e-check just bolt the catted y-pipe in place and not have to worry...

You would have to contact Lloyd Elliott directly to know for sure as i know emissions differ from each state that has them. I know this cam will pass our emissions as my dads car has an lt4 hotcam in it and it passed with flying colors first time. If they test your car at that rpm you should have no problem passing this cam but i would check. We have an idle test part of our emissions which where its the hardest to pass.

My 222/230 112 LSA cam and LE2 heads passed CA smog, through LT's and high flow cats with a mail order tune. Barely.

CA smog tests at idle, 15 mph, and 25 mph. I forget the RPM ranges for the speeds, but I believe its between something like 1700 and 2500. Don't quote me on that.
