what do you guys think of this lt1?
http://baltimore.craigslist.org/cto/2285764493.html
I posted about trying to make 400rwhp earlier this month, and came across this motor on my craigslist....
this whole motor is cheaper than doing a head and cam swap... from what i have researched... cause all the parts it does not have, i have on my car and can just swap
im going to call the guy today, what kinda questions should i ask? im new at this game so some tips would be nice.... he said is has 0 miles since the build, and is 12 to 1 to high for a street car on pump gas?

Uh don't think it will make 400 rwhp. I don't know though it depends on what he actually did to the heads. I don't know if I would even waist the time since it has been decked and the heads milled. I would like to know if he actually did a real compression ratio calculation on it or just did a guestimate. 12 to 1 is gonna be cutting it close. You will need a really good tune and 93 octane to keep it from having Pre-ignition problems.

heck? I would hope that he could compose an add better than that. Especially if he wants you to believe he knows what he is doing with a hi-tech motor like the Lt1, much less, be capable of assembling it correctly I say

I wouldn't touch it unless I knew more about the builder and the motor's history.
I bought a 355 a few years back from a guy I trusted and ended up wasting an entire
season because he put the main caps on wrong. It cost me $1000 in machine work
to fix the damage it caused plus all the time/labor to reinstall it a second time. #LFMF
If you want 400rwhp, get an H/C package and run it on a stock shortblock.
At least that way, you'll know it was done right. Both LE and AI have kits than can
pull it off on pump gas with a very reasonable idle and you won't have to pull your motor out to do it.
If you want to build something bigger ... get it from a reputable source or do it yourself.

^^^ thats the plan for right now... i was just looking into some alternatives that look nice... im trying to find some used ported heads trickflow AI LE i dont really care.... but i cant have a down time for 2-3 weeks so im gonna get some used ones

That's what most of us do to avoid downtime.
That way you get the most current portwork and you know who did it.
If you buy used, at least have them shipped to the porter for refresh and verification.
If you just throw any old set of "ported" heads on there, you're probably going to be very dissatisfied with the results.

That guy doesnt even sound like he can put laces through a shoe let alone build an engine. I love how just because the block is decked and the heads milled it is 12 to 1 compression, like its a fact that an unknown amount of decking and milling will produce 12 to 1 compression. I wouldnt buy from this guy, Do an le or ai top end get your 400hp on a stock short block like so many other do.

i agree with james montigony. you get what you pay for. send them out and be certain you got the best of the best and no surprises when the setup comes together. i know a guy who has a 396 lt1 with a pretty big cam and a set of "used ported heads" on his motor and his best ET to date is 11.92 a ET im hoping to replicate this fall with bolt ons only! nevermind a head/cam 396!

That was using portwork from 7 years ago and 2006-ish cam lobes.

Hitting 400 with the stuff on the market today will be easy.
