Heres Jegs part numbers: #220-C506-Cloyes timing chain and #220-S505 OVERSIZED-crank sprocket

Even when new, OEM GM timing set is loose.

when i installed the cam in my last motor, i bought a gm timing chain from the dealer and there wasnt much difference in slack. it just seems like there should be a reason behind it

Not necessarily... A number of years ago, I was chasing down an oil leak on a '93 Caprice LTZ that was my wife's car. I wasn't positive if it was the seal at the timing cover or the front of the oil pan gasket, so I decided to drop the pan, as well as pull the timing cover. At the time, the car had maybe around 50,000 miles on it, and I was amazed at how much slack the timing chain had. I replaced it with a Cloyes True Roller, and that chain was as snug as could be.

A couple years later, my '96 Camaro developed the "LT1 oil leak syndrome", and I pulled it down to replace seals and gaskets. Recalling what I had previously found with the Caprice's timing chain, I had a new Cloyes timing set ready. As suspected, the Camaro's OE chain had a lot of slack (the car had around 45,000 miles at the time). I bolted in the new set, and was shocked to find that the new one wasn't much tighter!!

I have no idea why this is, but it does seem to be an LT1 characteristic...

^ As mentioned, look into the available Cloyes S505 Oversized-crank sprocket. It will make the chain fit snug like it should. You can find them at Jegs.

I had a nightmare with timing chains on my motor, we used 5 different combinations of gears and chains, and then I finally got a Cloyes timing set and all was good.

True, but now that the SOB is finally not leaking any oil, there's no way I'm taking that thing apart again.......until it starts leaking oil again!!

However, I'll make note of that crank gear part number, and if I ever have to take it apart in the future, I'll get one and throw it in.
