My next upgrade is coming up and i'm hearing it's probably better to leave it to specialty mechanics instead of a general mechanic... which is gonna cost me.. what are your opinions..

I need to do a torque converter, gears, and a cam swap..

I got quoted 6 hours for gears, a day and a half for a torque converter, and was just told this guy wants to pull my heads to do my valvetrain..

I dunno..

Do it all but the gears yourself. It's easy.

If you can afford spending time, it wouldnt hurt to hire someone who knows how to do all of it for a case of beer and learn the trade yourself.

Converter swap 4hrs tops, no you don't pull the heads to put in a cam LOL.. On an ls1 you pull heads to replace lifters but on an lt1 u pull the intake.. An experienced rear end guy can do gears in a couple hours.. I would recommend an experienced guy to set up the gears... That's it though..

that's really long for both those, especially the convertor.

Take your car and run away from that moron as fast as you can.

A torque converter in an f-body can be swapped on a lunch break. There is absolutely no reason to pull the heads unless you are changing valves or machining the head for larger springs or something. The gear swap is high on labor time but not out of this world.

A day and a half for a converter Yea Ok It should only take a shop a day and a half on the converter if the tech is holding a sandwich in one hand the entire time and is forced to pound back 5 cases of beer. Hell I think 2 hours out, trans wont have to come all the way out just enough room to slip the old one off and new one back on and then hour and a half to put it back in and then 30min to fill and be ready for a test drive buttoning up what ever and double checking.

A buddy and I just did headers (had to clean em up and did a little welding to fix em), throttle body, egr delete (we fabbed our own plates), and a converter. It took a while to do because he was teaching me as we went because this is my first non-Honda build. We're going to be doing my cam and gears this week. None of it is very hard but can be time consuming.

Find someone close to you and have them teach you. I did a head and cam swap on an SBC (not too much different) in a boat in 4 hrs. Converter can be a pain doing it in the driveway, but isn't that bad....day job at most. Gears are easy enough to do if you have the right tools. Kicker is the tools aren't cheap and there's no reason to buy them if you're not going to set up a few of them. The rear is usually 2-3 hrs tops, especially at a shop. Find someone close that is willing to teach you and you'll learn alot more than paying out the rear and needing some KY-Jelly....

honestly only way I can see the convertor taking that long is if he's pulling out your stocker and bending the fins.
