I have done my hunting on this one, and it surely has given me the run around.

I know the 98-02 F-Bodies come with a plastic fuel tank, and mine comes with a metal one.

The car has been off the road for almost 5 years, and I neglected to empty my metal fuel tank prior to finishing the motor removal. Thus I have 5 y/o gas in a metal tank.

The motor is going back in hopefully this weekend and the last thing I want is contaminated gas going into my $7000 investment.

I would really like to upgrade to a plastic job. Will an LS1 fuel tank fit in my LT1 car? If not, is there a company out there who makes a plastic version of the stock LT1 tank?

I would reuse my old tank but I don't know what to expect when I drop the tank to clean it out. Ive heard of bubbling and peeling, etc. So I just would prefer the added insurance of having another tank ready to go should that be the case.

Why are you wanting to go to a plastic one? Why not just get another metal one? I guess i would just drop it clean it and check it then go from there before buying something else.

I believe the 98's also had a metal tank so you would need a 99-02 if it would work.

I have no problem retaining the metal tank if it isn't destroyed by 5 year old gas sitting in it. But I figured if it was in bad shape, I could put a plastic job in and not have to worry about corrosion and stuff in the future.

That sux....was thinking I was gonna get to swap in one from a 98 I'm parting for a friend. I just figured it would be a nice upgrade.

Ive thought the same thing in the past but have been unable to get my hands on both to do a weight comparrison or to see how compatable it would be. I dont think anyone has done it.

I've got a plastic tank out of a 2000 Z28, complete with fuel pump and all the attached tubing.
It's got a different fuel pump mounting system,...I was going to swap this into my 1995 but did'nt want to cut/splice the fuel lines

They are different so you will have fun making it work on a lt1 car. You can easily just get a stock metal tank and mount it with less drama

I had fuel sit in a tank for 10 years. Dumped it cleaned it and now it's as clean as the day it was new. This was on a third gen though

My fiances mother has a Miata that sat for 5 years and even with a full tank of gas the entire pump assembly and take was rust...nasty nasty stuff.

Here's a pic of what I found in my 94 tank. I ended up getting a reproduction (non oem) metal tank to replace it because it was locally available and direct replacement. The only issue I have is the threads on the neck do not want to work very well with any gas cap I've been able to try. I can get about 1/2-3/4 turn before it starts clicking like it's tight...but I know it's not.

My F Body LT1 sat for 7 years, bought the replacement plastic tank thinking it would be FUBAR,...I cut the fuel pump access door and removed the pump,...the tank was perfect internally(?!).

Pheewww, all good because changing over to the LS1 style plastic tank would have been a PITA.

Ok. Thought about it. Going to try and pull the stocker tank tonight.

To clean the OEM tank does it split apart or does it disassemble in some way so that I can get my pressure washer and really clean it? Once it is dry, I am going to install my racetronix kit, but until then I want zero chance of screwing up my new pump. Also, what is the best way to drain it? Last time I checked, there was about 6 gallons of fuel left in it.

My new tank went in last week. The gas inside was almost 14 years old and the inside of the tank was pitted from the awful rotting gas in there. It's a one piece design as you an see with the filler neck on the right side. It wasn't that heavy and would rather keep the extra weight in the back anyway IMO.

just removed 7 year old gas from my cutlass tank. looked new inside. gas looked like dark beer.
i put a plastic tank in my '93 and it fit fine, but i also swapped every nut,bolt, and hose from a '99 SS into that car so everything hooked up like it should. i dont think there is any advantage to a plastic tank other than being a little better with the ethanol/e85 fuels.

hey whats the difference between a fuel cell and a normal gas tank?

arent fuel cells a good upgrade for us as well?

At this point, I am just really looking to take the tank out and clean it.

I just need to know how to split the tank or take it apart so I can clean it, and how to clean the tank appropriately. I was planning on just blasting it with my power washer.
