Any header that moves the cat is illegal in CA (where smog laws apply). And OBD2 cars have the cat on the driver side way up there. Hence, shorties are all you can run.

Or you can do what I did, and find a smog guy that "overlooks" the LT's.

These are the legal 96 pacesetters,

These are the legal 93 pacesetters that I have,

If you look at the pictures, the 93 is a mid length design, the dual cats style is a short style.

Before LT's were widely available OBDII f-body owners would do the same as OBDI owners and buy OBDI style headers with the OBDI stock y-pipe and flange the catalytic converter and a straight pipe. This created a very significant gain. You could go this route, but for you it is still considered illegal and any vigilant e-check tech can fail you if spotted.

the problem here in SoCal is if the "part" does not have a CARB # stamped on it AND a corresponding sticker you will not pass smog. This does depend on who is doing the test and yes there are shops that are casual about it and others that will bust your *****.

most if not all 94-96 cars get a "test only" notice which often makes going to those class of shops more restrictive in terms of how the view mods.

I have had to stay on the "smog legal" side since I bought my car in 96. As a result I run Edelbrock shorty headers which are by far not the best performing but do have a CARB sticker and corresponding plate on the header. I have had the smog tech verify the # on my headers and "other" mods that have CARB #'s. Real PIA but a fact out here.

There are $300 "alternative" places but those are getting harder to find because CARB is clamping down on those operators

So that's what it cost to 'buy' a sticker in CA? Interesting...

If you drive less than 5k / year here you don't even have to get it inspected. I pay $25 for an exempt sticker One thing I love about Pa.
