The camshaft broke off just after the 4th journal. the last 4 inches are still inside the engine at the very back. HOW THE HELL DO I GET THAT OUT??!!

As of right now the motor is still in the car, so I was gonna take a high powered magnet and try to use that to pull it to me, and have a friend try to turn the cam through the lifter holes to get it out, but this most likely wont work...anyone have any ideas?

I may ed up pulling the engine and just popping out the back freeze plug to try and get it out that way...thoughts????

what oil pump are you using? that's a cast comp cam huh? good luck getting it out.

 

I dont know what pump yet. I will find out when I get the oil pan off and take a look...I gotta make sure there is no debris in the pan. I may replace it anyways just cause, but we will see

If it were me I'd just pull the SOB and tear it down. Why put effort into it and have a little garbage Fubar the rest of the engine? If it hasn't already. Rods and pistons were moving but where were the valves?

 

Doesnt matter where the valves were...they all closed as soon at it broke.

I am probably gonna just pull it and go over everything, I have just never seen this before so I am confused on how I am gonna get it fixed...I am gonna send it back to Comp Cams and they said they will warranty it cause it was a product failure

 

Engine has to be pulled, and I would take out the freeze plug and remove it from the back.

Even if you somehow grab it from the front, its gonna **** up every bearing on the way out.

Pull the motor I pulled a cam out of a older sbc with a broke cam and was a pita. I had to set the motor upwards and used a magnet to pull the rest of the cam out. I dont see you pulling the rest of the cam out with the motor in the car. Once the back of the cam drops off the bearing good luck getting it lined back up with it still in the car.

 

Not true, the rear portion of the cam stopped turning so whatever the position of the valves were when it happened is where the valves stayed until spring pressure equalized it to the spot of least resistance, do a compression test when you get it out (unless you tear it all down like I would) to see if any valves are even tweaked.

I would make them regrind it on a billet core just because, buy there's NO way that cam should have broken.

Things don't always do what they technically should do so why you have it out and apart I would just check them and see. I've had old Murphy on my back too many times. Hope it's all good as far as the heads go so that just one less thing to worry about.

 

No, there is no way to know if they are fine. The cam was at least moving 2 valves.

Don't reuse the oil pump.

 

I have never been a fan of comp products. To me they are an overpriced product, and it seems like 2 or 3 out 10 people have some sort of problem with them. But like said above that cam should not have broken and you should go billet for the next cam.

As you need to rebuild this engine, it's gotta come out. I think pushing the cam out the rear freeze plug is your best bet. Forget using a magnet, it'll never work.

 

lol damn, that's crazy. It's one of those things that sucks big time but gives you something to laugh about while you get everything back together.

Hope you get it out man. If you do get it out tell us cause I'm actually curious.
