If u look at fbodys consider what breaks first. Trans, clutch or read end. That's a good starting point for mods. If its a street car or a dd u may not need the dead hook all the time.
Should Prolly figure out what ur going to be using the car for

Pretty much it is my daily driver.. I run into ALOT of quick cars but I would like to build mine for light to light or for an 1/8 mile dragg way.. With all the helpful info I have started considering getting a pair of 3.73s an some drag radials for the days I hit up a track..

I have to agree on some mild suspension upgrades as a start. My car's stock suspension was BUSTED when I bought it a year ago. I got caught at a red light with a modded GT and it was either puss out or give it a try.

I was side ways through 3rd; he hooked and was gone.

I ran into a similar situation AFTER I got BMR Springs, Bilsteins, and Nittos; rest of the car is stock besides CAI and catback. I hooked, kept it straight, and finally took a win in my beaten SS lol.

You can have tons of power but it wont do you much good if you can't convert it to the pavement; or if all that power destroys your rear end lol.

I would look into tires, springs, shocks, sub-frame connectors, and lower control arm relocation brackets. After that I would look into some decent gears, brakes, stall converter, and some new U-Joints.

That should give you a solid base for a fun street car.

thats a great start next would be heads/cam... then suspesension for the finishing touches. Check some youtube clips on stock suspension 1/8 or launches..You also mention you wanna compete with ls1...just my .02 i dont think starting with suspension was gonna get you there!

He did not ask if he could be faster than the fastest bolt on LS1. His question was much too vague.

Doesn't change the fact that every single thread possible speed_queer24 pops up and smarts off about LS1's being better.

if your going to get a different set of wheels and tires for the track i suggest the ET streets. They are probably the best tire for what you want, and a 275 is ok, dont think you need a 315, its just extra weight. If you want a tire for the street get nitto 555r or NT05r,but just remember its a tire for the street. The mileage for the et streets is 8k if your good, the nittos is about 15k-18k. They last longer but you sacrifice consistant track times over the ET streets.

I say do a mix of things. Start with the suspension basics, SFC, PHB,LCAs, Then get some Drag radials. Then get a GOOD stall, after that start modding the motor After you start making real power and cant hook anymore get some nice shocks and K-member a-arms.

With a Auto the 3.73s wont help you so much at your level, and 10bolts last pretty good.

Care to explaine a lurks more about that 10 bolt? I was considering 3:73s because I get out the hole good with 3.42s but ever since I've put these vett stocks on I cant hold any traction..

What do you mean Lurks?
I would keep it stock until you can afford a real rear end. They break easy with a hooking stick car but hold up pretty good with auto cars. 3.73s will hurt traction and not give you a big gain unless you have a bigger cam that starts making power in a higher power band.

Sounds like everyone is getting a little sidetracked. I'v basically done what the original post said. Stock LT1 full drivetrain, full rear suspension, minor bolt-ons to the engine. Unfortunately I have not had it at the track yet, still waiting to get it running perfect. I can tell you that it does hook hard and its not even setup 100%.

I like the idea of having a car that will handle whatever power you can throw at it without breaking, and we all know the first thing to break on these cars is not the engine.

Any good sets of shocks in mind? I was told that if I were to get the adjusable shocks then I would make them loose in the front and stiff in the back.. Any one else KNO of this?

IMO get the best shocks you can afford. I have Strange Double adjustable fronts and madman valved AFCOs DAs out back. I would go AFCO up front but the Stange shocks have the adjustments on the bottom of the shock and will be easier to set. Keep in mind these are 1500 shocks and the stock shocks work pretty damn good.

That's where I would start. Some gears, a good DR and a Yank SS 3600. I'm assuming you have Headers and exhaust. If you don't hook then do some suspension mods.

^What he said. Sticky tires with a stock suspension will hook better than stock tires with a bunch of suspension work.
