Default Budget LT1 Build Suggestions

My friends and I are getting ready to buy a donor car for a summer project involving a big engine being mounted in a small car. We're going to rebuild a LT1 w/ T56 from the ground up. It will be a track car, but we still would like it to be street legal. Most of the performance upgrades will be financed through parting out the donor car over the internet and we're not limited to bolt-on pieces.

The victim: a 2nd generation Mazda RX7 FC
Our goal: at least 400whp

What will give me the most bang for my buck?
Hot Cam kit? New heads? Lightweight flywheel?

Just to clarify, the donor car will likely be an F body with 2 bolt mains. I'm not going to pay a premium for a Y body just to rip it to pieces. Would also like to keep it N/A.

Heads&cam from either LE or AI, better clutch, gears, and radials.

If you want cheap 400whp LE is hard to beat. Having an m6 will certainly help.

LE2 heads, le2.x cam. That's what I'd do. Should allow for right around 400whp at the cheapest I could see.

Maybe try the 21' trick flow heads and a 230-240 duration shelf cam?

Hot cam will not make 400whp easy. It will take quite a bit of work to eclipse 400 with one.

I'm starting to think I should buy some heads to experiment on... I've found an LT1 on Craigslist needing a rebuild for $200 with iron heads so I'll probably port them for practice and do the same to a used aluminum pair when I see a bargain.

Seems like a lot of money for little return. How much better of a platform is an LS1?

if you already have an LT car it is not even close to a budget to switch over to an LS engine.

I have rebuilt iron LT1 heads and the better 374 aluminum heads sitting on my shelf (all assembled). Send me an offer. It is my understanding the iron heads flow better right out of the box stock. Sell all four heads for cheap.

Where are you located, I will give you a hell of a deal.

Much better. Go there. Also, maybe you should read up a bit. Dyno numbers are pointless.

Dyno numbers are really popular in the supra forums I hear...
