Default PLEASE READ: 95 Z28 ignition problem

I have a 95 Z28 A4. I just replaced the opti and plug wires. It starts up and runs flawlessly until it warms up (about 5 minutes or so) and then it just... dies. I just walked home again and it looks so hot sitting on the side of the road. It has 4K on a motor rebuild. I just replaced the optispark harness with a new one (lsxtune.com) since it was in bad shape. The coil and ICM are stock and have been spaced from the head. I have redundant grounds from the frame to the coil base. After the car dies I have no spark from the coil wire. Im running out of ideas and deffinitely running out of money. Can anyone help? Thanks.

if you are sure the distributor is a good one i would lean tward the ignition control module,

1. Check for power to the ignition coil and module with the key on and cranking on the Pink/Black wires. If OK, check the Black wire on the module for a good ground.

2. Verify that the Check Engine Light is coming on and the scan tool will communicate with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

3. At the ignition module the White wire pin "B" should have a 0-5 volt signal from the PCM to signal the module to pulse the coil. If the White wire has a square wave, check pin "D" (White wire from the coil) for 12 volts that should be pulsed to ground by the module.

4. If "D" is not being pulsed to ground and does have 12 volts, replace the ignition module.

I don't have a scanner but I do have access to one. Its just a matter of when I can get it. And if the icm works cold it will most likely test good right?

So remove the icm and bring it to the store right after the car dies?? I can do that. Would I benefit from a remote mount and a cooling fan? I can put that together...

If the store knows what there doing they will keep testing it until it gets hot. That's usually when they fail

Good to know. Thank you. I own an LT1 car so the parts store guys know me well... I've pretty well narrowed it down to ICM, coil, or PCM. I doubt strongly that the coil is bad and I hope to God the PCM isn't! Ill get that module checked out tomorrow. Last time the brainiac at the counter said they weren't capable of testing it but it should be common with Impala SS/Roadmaster/Fleetwood right?

The ICM is pretty reliable but what you are describing is the most common way they fail.

Wish I had one to swap in there... I guess its one of those risks I have to take. Oh well at least damn near everything under the hood is new and I've probably invested the amount of one good beating at the local mechanic. Thanks for all the help guys.

try the icm spacer mod and make sure the clip to the icm/coil stays on, wire tie it if you have to.
