The only way to KNOW they work is to have done it! I have learned to be skeptical of internet posts stating parts will work!
I just added a Vortec dizzy to an LT1 if you read about it on the internet there is no problem, BUT in reality there are a few small problems like: the EGR and EGR boss, fuel lines and fuel pressure regulator are all in the way and need to be 'adjusted'.
What cam do you have? (Which LE)
What is your estimate of CR with the .028” and this gasket?
What are you trying to achieve? DD?
Don't just say maximize CR or power, the better you describe your goals the more likely you are to get replies that help.
Believe it or not some just read a couple articles on line and throw this and that together and end up with high CR small cam huge stall and wonder why they get crap MPG and get beat by stock vehicles.
Welcome and good luck

Well hell you read it on line it must be FACT?

A few things people will want to know:

I didnt ask or want to tell what my CR is or will be with this gasket. I asked how much to cut out of the water ports on the gasket. Why do i need to tell you my goals and cam size to know how to mod a gasket? L.E. set me up with my cam for my specific application but i dont see how it is relevant to what i asked. I know that it works because the guys running them have had them for a while and havnt had a problem. And like you said the only way to know how to know it works is by doing it.... so i guess im going to have to do it to know for sure.... i asked a simple damn question that needs a simple answer. I take it this is why people on LTX said dont come over here and ask questions......

I won't try to explain all the problems this will cause and for <10 RWHP it isn't worth it IMO.
I suggest you go to a parts store and put an LT1 head gasket over a Gen 1 head gasket...
Again good luck

Wow this thread is full of fail because of nothing but put ignorance. I absolutely love how this site can take a thread that ask a simple basic question and turn it into pure bullshit. We all learn by trial and error, if we don't learn that way then we learn by reading on the internet which is what this site is for. Many people have run shim gasket, me not being one of them but still. Find someone that has and send them a pm it will completely avoid trolls like this thread is full of.

Can an old style headgasket be used on an LT1?
Yes
Will you end up with coolant leaks? It is more likely to leak than using the correct gasket, but if ~10 rwhp is worth the added risk then use a gasket as a guide.
10 rwhp isn't a BS number it assumes he gets 2.5% and has 400 and that is HIGH considering the difference of the two gasket thicknesses
A better method to increase his CR is too deck the block or take more off the head.
If you want to say BS address something specific. I agree forums ARE meant to share, and that means to identify and CORRECT what is wrong so others will learn what was incorrectly posted.
If there are significant errors quote so we can all have the right information.

Heads are shaved as much as CFM was comfortable doing and the motor is in the car so shaving the deck is out of the question. So at this point im willing to risk doing it. Its not my d/d.

My point was to get YOU to see the difference wasn't worth it.
ie If the engine has 10.2 with .028 and you change it to .018 the compression goes to ~10.5 or cr increases .3 not bs just physics. Then even if you get 4% per point of increased cr that would yield ~1.2 hp per 100 or ~5 rwhp if you have 400 rwhp..
I used
http://www.csgnetwork.com/compcalc.html
Not the greatest bang for the buck and for the $$ there are many more reliable mods to increase performance, but it is your car.
Edit: going from a .040" gasket to a .018 yeilds ~.54 or 8.5 rwhp
