10 inch rear with 3.73 gears
I realize that If i beaf my motor up and take it to the strip its more than likely going to break. Ive read the links that talk about them breaking under traction at the strip. My question is that if i build my motor up to say 400-450 hp at the wheels and drive it strictly street, do i have a prayer of it holding up for a year or two? I plan on getting on it a lot, but not reving it up and popping it.
I did mean 10 bolt rear sorry

Im guessing you mean a 10 bolt not a 10 inch. It'll last a little longer on the street but it's just a guessing game. An automatic car will be a lot nicer on a 10 bolt compared to a 6-speed. What kills them is hard launches and clutch dumps, cuz the 7.5" ring gear is so small and weak. Save up for a 12 bolt or a 9" and be happy.
FWIW I killed my ring and pinion when my car was bone stock on MT Drags and it was on the street at that time.

Automatics will be easier on the rear. But that power range and running in the 1.69 or quicker 60 foots will wear it out more quickly and when you get that "Howl" its done and you will need a rebuild or upgrade. A M6 will pretty much dust the 10 bolt when you either dead hook or hop.
Also to mention HOW you get to your power range will dicate how long the rear lives. The harder the hit, the quicker it goes.
I am being very general but that is what will happen.

As stated it is not torque that determines the life of the diff, but rather shock to the driveline. You can make a diff. last as long as you want regardless of output if you apply the discipline needed to keep things from breaking.

i have 2 a4 cars with 4.10 in one 4.56 in other and the only thing stock is the case, they have both ran great for over 5yrs, but it took time to make it right, if the gears are not installed correctly and there is no girdle you will walk the caps and blow the gears up very easy. i would suggest buying a moser or strang 12 bolt.... 10 bolts are time bombs
