It's not. It's been around for a hundred years and is responsible for the same or better performance than the mainstream heads/cam rock stars. Anyone telling you different is a moron.

Not sure if your talking flywheel HP or rear wheel hp; sounds like you want a smaller cam like the LT4 Hotcam or CC503 if your concerned about gas mileage. I went with the Lunati voodoo 60121; slightly bigger than the hotcam. It gets 2-3 MPG worse now with the cam (I also put in 4.10 gears) with a 6 spd I average 16 MPG with 50/50 city highway driving; WAY more power though. You MUST get a good dyno tune however....I was getting 11-12 MPG with a mail order tune.
