Golen 396 lt1
Ok so im reaching out to this forum for advise. So I have been saving for the past year or so and I'm ready to drop a 396 lt1 long block from Golen in my 97' Z28, its a m6 with stock 10 bolt with 3.42 gears. What are everyones thoughts.....good idea bad idea???? Is a 396 any heavier then the stock 350, what should I look for, what should I make sure that I have.
Here is a few things that i have that will be going onto the motor, hooker long tube headers, ory pipe, high flow cats, slp loudmouth 1, ported intake manifold, larger injectors, new water pump, new opti, 58mm holley tb, slp cold air, grantelli mass air, new higher out put alternator, new plugs and wires. as far as that am I missing anything? there is a 12bolt rear coming in december from hawksthirdgen with 4.11 gears, but that for a another time.

I would ditch the granatelli maf and use a stock one, maybe descreened. I've seen them cause havoc when trying to tune a car. All of your other parts sound like your heading in the right direction. Although I am unfamiliar with the strength of the m6 and clutch, I would assume at least a clutch upgrade, maybe. McLeod or other aftermarket brand would be in order.

i would ditch the cats and the m.a.s and get a stock m.a.s and leave the cats off and n/a 600rwhp is high hopes for that..but good luck with your build sounds likes some nice stuff u have so far...heads and cam details?

I wouldn't touch anything from Golen, IMO...too many horror stories, myself included. Especially when the owner tells me that broken cast cranks are commonplace, yet he continues to use them in his products.
I stand behind the fact that using a local reputable performance-oriented engine shop is always better than a mail-order engine block. You have some lofty goals here that likely won't be achieved without using spray. Research the success other people have had and see what it takes to reach that 600whp mark.

exactly! descreening them makes it less tunable!

I have a better shop for you to use. They've been building LSx/LTx engines for the last 10+ years and know exactly what needs to be done to make one work. It's possible it may cost a bit more than an internet shop, but they stand behind their work and are well known on the Eastern seaboard. They are located in Laurel, MD. You have a PM w/ their info.

I don't believe you understand what 600 RWHP is, the parts you stated are a good start for a typical build, Nothing indicates parts for a 600 HP motor. For that, N/A you are talking big and I mean big Solid Roller, Sheet metal intake, Lots of compression ect. And like said 600 N/A is very likely not to happen, Also it will not be streetable at all..You better do some more checking, ride in a car that has proof of say 400 RWHP and go from there, I have spoke to people that have an app 350 RWHP motor and "SAY" they think its making 500 to the wheels...

iv got a golen 396 but mine was built back in 04. been daily driving it for over a year. only problems im ran into are the head gaskets seeping coolant outside the motor and running down the block and for some reason, they decided to used stock pushrods with a .575 lift cam. bent 7 of them. replaced with comp, no issues. also had a rocker bearing fall out. replaced with ultra mags

Your tuner is a morron. Ask an engineer who designs MAFs. The screen helps keep debris out and most importantly straightens airflow which allows for more accurate readings. IF you gained anything the same hp can be gained from a tune. Removing it skews the readings and probably leaned out a little. Again anyone who reccomends it is a complete morron.
