Hey guys heres a question...i have a spare motor from a 97 ws6 the motor has 52,000 on it. So i pulled the heads off and i want to do some home porting, gasket match the whole bit. I want to swap with my 93 heads until i get enough money to send them to do a LE2 setup. I have been told they can port '93' heads more than the rest, is this true? And how much extra power can i get porting and is it worth the work? One more i want to change the head gaskets from .050 to .028 i think it will give me 11 to 1 ratio is this to much for 182k? Thanks

More often than not home porting heads gets you nowhere or you end up with a ruined set of heads. There's far more to it than just gasket-matching and going nuts with a Dremel. It's not for the beginner, nor are the gains on a stock cam worth the risk. You're talking MAYBE a handful of HP, if that, even if done properly. Chances of that happening on your first go-around with home-porting are nil.
Leave the heads alone.

I do have books and videos and this is not truly my first go round, i was hoping to get 20-25 hp out of them. The 182k motor still pulls 13.5 @105 so it is still going strong. Just thought i would gain a little. Anybody know about the headgasket thickness is that correct at 11 to 1?

Don't ever let the bit stop while touching the head or start the bit while on the head. Also be very very careful when in the valve margen area. I also suggest haveing a valve job done afterwards your more likely than not to hit that area your first few times. If you get bits get a few diffrent lengths to make thing a little more easy to control the bit. Good luck

If I would have taken all the hours I spent porting my heads and put in overtime at work, I could have bought 2 sets of LE2's or one set of CNC'd heads. And would have way better results. I had mine flowed, but I haven't put the motor in yet, so we'll see what the dyno and track times say about the port job. One day....maybe....hopefully.
I don't regret doing the home port job....yet anyway. I had fun and it was good experience. Just plan on spending 40+ hours if you're trying to get to >195cc and have them all match, etc, etc.
I've been having an experimental set of 561 castings that have been in my garage for a few weeks and I just can't bring myself to start all over again. I don't know how some guys do it on a daily basis and stay motivated.
