.030 over is plenty, but the block/pan clearancing is going to be significant with a 396, and heinous with a 409. What are your plans?

I would like to know how much power can be pulled out of them. Looking at going with a 396.

How much power is all going to depend on the setup. A custom hydraulic roller, good heads, and a 396 bottom end will get you into the 400's easy. In all honesty though, a well set up 355 will be very similar and keep the cost down. For a 396 to really be able to breathe up top, you're talking aftermarket heads and a port job, which is going to run you about $4000 for the top end alone.

Power? Look at Joe Overton. His motor is a testament to the potential of an LT1. It has a 381 displacement (I believe that's a 0.020 overbore with a 3.750 crank), solid roller cam, and I believe the heads are AFR's, although I could be wrong. He's moving in the 9's at 130+ I think.

My suggestion would be to figure out A: Your budget and B: Your goals before making a firm descision on a setup to go with.

Oh, the Callies crank is far and beyond better than the Eagle, but the Eagle is just fine and costs much less than the callies.

I have a set of ported heads with 2.00" int 1.55"exh valves on the car now with a set hooker L/Ts and a mufflex 4" cat back. I am happy with my set up now, but looking to go with a stroker in the near future. I guess I just want to know if the bigger strokes 396/409 can realy pull more HP, And how safe is it to do them? Thanks for the info so far.

Eagle has had some quality issues with their cranks recently. I know 3 guys in my town that had issues getting the balancer to fit on the snout.

I would go with Callies. Or Scat if you're on a budget.

If your looking for reliable power stick to 396ci(.030 0ver bore) or 398ci (.040). Granted the clearancing required for either of these motors is alot of work in its self. I remember a company offering a 409ci LT combination but many people had problems with this combination or lager becuase of a few reasons one being the rod/stroke ratio sucked, over heating problems due to over boring to obtain the displacements/block failure and pistons breaking due to side load issues. The motor made good power but the few I seen should have any how considering the parts used such as very large solid roller cams and 227 runner heads. These motors(409ci) where very short life combinations like maybe 1 year of beating and then time to pull engine becuase more than likely inside the motor would have broken parts.

If your in the market for a LT1 stroker I have a brand new never installed nor fired complete ARE 396ci LT1,AFR heads, solid roller cam, custom direct port fogger, steel Cola crank, and so on. Best of parts. Everything is new with exception of block and that was reworked. If interested shoot me a e-mail I will make ya great deal on the motor. This engine has enought power to put a f-body into the 9's on the spray.

Let me if interetsed,
Jim
