I think it was mentioned but the LT1's have an adjustable valvetrain and the 302's don't hence needing a shim.
Yes the LT1's use the regular SBC springs. After you decide what cam you are going with then decide on your springs.
Just depending on what you want to do with the car there are better cams than the hot cam and especially the edelcrock.

Here are a good set of spings I am using. The hot cam springs are cheap, but will barely work with a hot cam. These are good to 600 lift I believe and are very reasonable IMHO. So check them out

It's all good man. Countless times people on this forum have learned the hard way (boostedpower, Lawhead, myself, etc.) and refused to take good sound advice from multiple people only to end up regretting their decision/path later on and either starting completely over or having a poorly running car with nothing to show for their lack of effort. Many times budget is the concern sure, but 95% of the time the half-*** builds end up spending MORE than a one-time quality build in the long (and sometimes the SHORT) run.
