Auto or 6 speed? The 6-speed guys have it a bit easier than the auto guys because of the lack of trans cooler lines. It's pretty straight-forward though - not too tough. 2 bolts hold it to the block and there are two wire connections to remove. The hardest part is finagling it out with the exhaust in the way.

it is a 6-speed, I am glad that makes it easier!! I heard it is real easy to cross thread the bolts as you put them back on...

Course threads in an iron block? I sure hope not. That sounds like someone who may get 1/2 a thread in and hit it with an impact.

^^lol.

If you have longtubes, with the six speed, it's like a 20 min job, and I'm slow.

If you finger tight them to get some threads in, or put them in with an extension, you'll be fine.

If youre cars anything like mine was be ready to get your hands dirty, I dropped mine and slid it forward along the block and it dropped out infront of the rad.

just did a 96. my cousins starter went out. not really hard at all worst part was trying to angle it out between the exhaust. well i guess that wasnt the worst.. we actually found out he had only one bolt holding his starter in and thats why it broke the starter in half! so i have to get a busted bolt out of the block as well..

oh dont forget to unhook the battery lol

LOL, Thanks, I definitely won't forget the Battery!! Sounds like you had a job on your hands!!
I am going to get under there today and take the old one out...The problem is I can't Start it, I wonder if I could tap on the starter a little to get it going, the problem with that is the sparks that are coming from the starter!! or maybe push start it to get it on some ramps. I thought about using the floor jack to get it up and then slide the ramps under it but I would have to keep the car even. I am not to keen on just using jack stands while under the car...

aww jack stands are great. ive never been afraid of them... the people that scare me are the ones who jack up the car with the floor jack and then crawl under it with just the floor jack holding it up... scary lol

What kind of starter are you putting in it, some of the cheap rebuilds are junk. Even a few of the high torque mini's are too.

I'm sure that will work fine on your car..When I change plugs on cars I usually go with Duralast wires from autozone..Why? they sound better than the O'reilys brand omnispark..

Make sure you pull the bat. cables. You do not want any sparks.

Is should be alright, on a stock motor. I had to run a junk rebuild for a bit on my my motor it didn't care for that. A lot of the rebuilds aren't done very well. They should have a set of screws on the back of the solenoid like the stock ones do. Many of the companies that rebuild them don't bother to install them. I also bought a mini starter and they only use a single solenoid wire to the windings, most of the stock ones use two. You have to open them up to see what it has, if it ever stops working with no clicking sounds then it has burned this wire up.

I run a stock starter on my 396, there is a local shop that does nothing but starters and he showed me why the other ones were junk. I haven't had any problems from the stock unit he sold me after I killed two "built" ones.

Shoot, I took the starter in yesterday to have it tested, the starter is actually working, the solenoid is arcing though. Looks like I have to buy a new starter anyway. I hope it is as easy getting it back in as it was getting it out, Hopefully I won't have to shim it...
