The answer to your specific question "the cheapest way to retard the timing" is a resistor for the air temp sensor so the PCM thinks it is 100 degrees hotter than it really is ambient. Last I checked Radio Shack had them around 4 for $1.

^^^^ I'd always wondered that to.. I would say with a set up like your car or even something like my car being a bolt on with a tune we would need a separate no2 tune. I dont think running cooler plugs and retarding the timing will be surfice

Really, no way around cheap. Seems like there would have been an open place in the market for a cheap timing retard (when these cars where hot). The only cheap way is the resistor mod (im not fan). So the alternative is a used box, and its a good upgrade for an LT1.

Cheap is never smart when it comes to cars. I want a cheap way to blow my pistons apart on a 150-200bigger shot of nos. I will yell you right now that on a 125 shot and up if you don't read plugs and adjust the retard the car is going to run like **** in the upper rpm on the nos. The best bang for the buck would be either a digital 6 msd or the mallory box posted. This will give you the ability o find what your engine likes. If not you will likely blow spark out and send some parts out via the oil pan real quick.

MAF Translator Plus has timing retard for N20 and it's plug and play, no wire cutting or splicing and I have one for sale brand new never used. Here's some pics

i like the mallory box but the msd 6al with a timing box is nice too anyone have these items still for sale? vendors?
i have a 94 lt1 doing a wet 150 set up i dont want to spend a ton of money but i know this stuff isnt cheap either.
whats the easiest user friendly ways to pull 3-4 degrees on these motors only when spraying either manually or automatically?

Mallory 685 is probably the best combination of cheap easy and automatic.
I know this is an old post BUT I still think it odd I didn't see anyone ask how the car was setup before he wanted to pull timing.
If someone has a bolton car with stock programming I would just put 92-94 octane in, stock programming is for 91 octane and safely conservative, little extra octane and a modest shot should be nice and safe. If he had an aggressive tune tune though then it would be prudent to look to dial it back some.
There is a "professional" tuner that has repeatedly been caught setting timing over 40degrees at WOT sometimes with AFRs over 14:1, you spray a 100shot on that and you will likely have a problem.
