Default Header Gaskets

How many of you run header gaskets or go without any and just use Copper RTV?

If you use a Gasket which brand do you prefer and the same question for RTV?

What size/length header bolts do you guys use? I've heard that they need to be longer then the SBC bolts!
This will be a 95% track car by the way.

Anyone who tells you to use RTV instead of gaskets is a plain moron. Overall a bad idea.

Use Felpro 1406s, dry.

For header bolts, you'll find all kinds of different opinions, but mostly it depends on your headers and how much clearance you have to work with the primaries. However the only thing we can all agree on is that you'll want to go with a 1" bolt wherever possible (again, depends on the headers you have).

I have had friends racing for 30 plus years and not use gaskets but it just doesnt seem right to me to be honest. Just looking for opinions!

are those bolts the same as oem or are they weaker/stronger?

I just unbolted my exhaust manifolds and i had 1 bolt break in the process. Maybe it was my fault, but id like to know if there are any other stronger bolts out there.

No problems with no header gaskets, I go without them all the time. You can also just get gasket paper from the parts store and cut gaskets out of that, or use sand paper. It lasts much longer than normal header gaskets such as the "fel-pro 1406" junk...

I would just get some wood screws at Lowes to hold the headers on.

Dont try and side track him here, I'm really trying to help. I used to make and sell custom sandpaper head gaskets down south and that **** was rowdy. Usually picks up a few tenths due to increased scavenging, and they will last longer than the headers themselves.

You can coat them with a little turpentine to help them stick.

Nah, just use some caulk. That way you won't even need bolts.

Spray it. Then replace it..... Then use the sandpaper to clean out the headers?

Dont have any pics but you just make an outline of the flange on the sand paper and then cut it with a utility knife.

Felpro 1406s are junk??? Guess I like junk then cause these gaskets are prolly the best I've used. I've never had any problems with them what so ever! Anyways...if you use arp bolts make sure and get the 5/16s headed ones. The 3/8s work fine but are a SOB.

I knew I would get some comedians with this one but you guys came up with some Larry the Cable Guy responses, lol!

I am off to get some 1406 Felpro's! I will look for the right bolts or just go by some 12 points!
