Lt1 cam choice for DD
Hey everyone, I'm new here as this is my first LT1. I just picked up my 94 camaro Saturday, decided to get rid of my gutless 96 mustang gt. Never a fan of the 4.6. Anyways it already has Longtube headers, Off road Y, 3 inch exhaust, slp cold air. So I was looking at camming the car this summer. Its my daily, so nothing too radical, looking at the cc305 or cc503. I want enough power to pull on my brothers c5 (around mid 12s, 325-350rwhp), but still have stockish idle and decent mpg. I was leaning towards the cc305 for the idle quality but heard alot of people are disapointed with it. Which would be your reccomendation for a daily driver and why.

lt4 hot cam or 503cc...... Both are very proven with the right set-up and tune... Good driving quailty and not radical at idle. Anywhere from 320-350 rwho depending on dyno tune and a4 or 6spd

Of the recommended I would scratch the 305 and the HOT for sure so old and lazy there is really no reason.
The 503 is a proven performer.
The XFI lobes like gregrob suggested are designed to use moder spring technology BUT you need to exercise a little caution as Comp's rpm ranges are a good 400+rpms less than you will actually turn which can make their spring recommendations insufficient. It looks like Comp recommends the 918beehive with that cam and I think in this case that will work, but they also recommend that spring for some larger cams and it can have some trouble. Some people have tried dual springs with the XFI lobes and had trouble.
What are you thinking about gears/stall(if applicable)?

The CC503 does not have lazy lobes. The 305 does, and is basically a loser for an NA engine.
That LPE 211/219 is one of the best off-the-shelf sleeper cams. None of the others mentioned will have a stockish idle.
If you can find a Crane 227, that would fit your requirements nicely.
But, honestly, just bypass mediocrity, spend the extra $100 and go straight to AI or LE for one of their custom cams that is optimized for your stock heads, your performance/DD goals, and your valvetrain durability expectations. And be SURE to run the supporting valvetrain components that either of them recommends!

I'm already a member since this is my second camaro, haven't been on there in awhile though. That cam does sound pretty sweet, a little more than I want for my dd though. You ever make it up to grand rapids or do you mainly stay around battle creek area?

Far as durability with something like the XFI lobes you just need to buy good springs instead of the cheapest springs that fit. There were some growing pains early on when those lobes were released with Comp switching to an offshore manufacturer but there are a lot more spring options these days.
If you want to do it once and do it well you could spend the extra on say a nitrided spring.
I actually think I know someone looking to sell an AI 226/234 cam if interested I can send an email. It wont pass for stock though.
Really I think Pat made a good point, if you want stock sound the LPE 211/219 is a really good choice.
