Question 97 lt1 evap purge solenoid different from earlier years?

I was talking shop with a friend and while looking over his car I noticed that his evap purge solenoid doesn't have a 90 degree vent tube (goes to nothing it is an open tube) coming out of the bottom of the solenoid like mine does? I don't see this on pictures for a 97 replacement part either so I am wondering what it is for?

Nothing is wrong with my car, in fact it runs great. I don't have any problems with the evap and I don't want to remove it or tune it out, but I do want to know why the evap style I have differs from the others I have seen.

The EVAP switch is the part with the 90* vent hose. If that hose is missing, it's not really a big deal.
