That sounds like a good idea. Hard to keep building without knowing a lot about the foundation.

What is the deck height?

I'll take some measurements next time i get a chance to work on it!

That was also on the list of things to do next time I'm in the garage. Already have the plexiglass and graduated cyclinder to measure the heads. I dont spin it to redline often as it is so probably go with a mild cam. That and the 383 should be fun enough. Thanks for the advice.

Once you know what static compression is maybe you could get a mild custom cam to help improve dynamic compression.

first thing and cheapest thing to do if it was me would be toss the thinnest gasket you can find on there it will cut down the quench and increase the compression.......its a win win

I've heard that regular Gen1 SBC head gaskets could be used on an LT1 with only minor changes....I figured this is a good time and place to ask.

If so, the .015" thick composition gasket that FelPro sells for old school 350's would give a good bump IF your pistons are at least .015" in the hole. (Usually .020" to .025" stock)

I don't know about a .015" composition gasket, but this one has been used on a few LT1 builds: Felpro 1094, .015" rubber coated steel shim gasket.
Just use an old LT1 gasket as a template to add the required cooling holes.
