O2 bungs in y-pipe

Ok I need some help and info. My problem is this I have hooker long tube headers with no O2 bungs. Can I drill the holes for the O2 bungs in the y-pipe right where the Y-pipe connects to the headers? Or will that cause the check engine light to come on. Keeping in mind I'm only running the front two O2 sensors, had the rears programmed out. The car is a 97' Z.

It wont cause an SES light, but if you have a header leak it will give your O2s fits.

Why can't you tap the bungs into the collectors?

Have standard M18 O2 bungs welded into the header collectors. Pretty simple.

It helps to keep them closer to the engine (not on the y-pipe) for heating purposes.

Thanks guys for the quick replies, I could weld the bungs into the collectors but I just spent $600 on polishing them, if I cut into the collector and weld the bungs, it will kinda look like crap, plus the rust issue, even though this car never sees rain. I know it, it all sounds stupid, but Im just trying to preserve what I can, and if I can get away with drilling bungs into the hooker ory-pipe without any lights coming on, I'd rather do that.

How did you spend $600 polishing them?

You need to have the O2s in the collectors. Exhaust begins to cool immediately after leaving the cylinder head. O2s need to be HOT to work properly and accurately, so the further you have them from the head the less reliable they will be.

Drill a hole, weld a bung in, then "polish" the weld, or whatever you did. That's the right way to do it!

When with this company mirror finish polishing. It was $285 a header. Long story, took even longer to get them back from that company. 8 months and many arguments.
