Default Anybody have luck with aftermarket coil's

Hello, ive got a 96 z28 I just installed some longtubes and have some taylor wires, an msd cap and rotor with ac delco rapidfire plugs. Ive been thinking of getting a Hypertech 52,000v coil I ran across on summit, I haven't heard alot of good thnigs about the msd coil, and alot of people say to stay with stock. My car has 189,000 mi and id like to upgrade and maybe get some MPG or a couple hp. Anybody actually try the Hypertech or MSD coil with positive things to say?

The 96-97 coils are better than the earlier coils and comparable to aftermarket. Probably no need for you to replace it.

By 96 they had 100K tuneup service interval and pretty strict emissions standards and long emissions warranty which all adds up to the ignition system being pretty good. You are way off base even considering a coil for this car. If you need one a new stocker would be perfect.

I say this as someone who tried an "upgraded" ignition on a stock car and then again later on the car with the current setup and if anything an ignition box SLOWED the car .05.

I would not have messed with Rapidfire plugs either, stock double platinums can be fine for LONG term use otherwise a basic cheap plug like a NGK TR55 changed like once a year is great.

You want a few HP for cheap try a set of LT4 springs, even with stock rockers they should let the engine keep making power just a little bit longer at the top of each gear

Still not sure what to do, maybe ill try the MSD since its just over $40 and ive been thinking of changing my plugs to the NGK tr55 plugs since it seems to be what everyone else is using. If the msd fails ill still have my stocker.

If from the above responses you are going to then buy a coil to try then don't waste our time asking questions when all you want is blind validation.

I don't know if this matters at this point but I can tell you I've tested stock vs. MSD coil at the track with absolutely no difference in times or MPH's what so ever. Waist of money, stay with stock.

I had a MSD "street fire" coil for a few years on my 94 car until it died when my ICM took a dump; now have a $20 autozone OE replacement coil....can't tell any difference. It's red though! Red parts means it goes fast! I would spend the money on better wires if you want to "upgrade" your ignition...MSD makes nice wires.

I installed an MSD coil on my car, and it made zero difference in how it runs.

ok well it seems im getting a mixed decision on the MSD half of you said theyve been on for thousands of miles and worked fine, although not any difference it how it runs but the other half have said they failed. Ill try the Hypertech and see if theres any difference, it has to be better than my old stocker, ill let you all know what happens when I get it. Not trying to waste anyones time just trying to make the best decision on what to buy. No ones tried the Hypertech so I guess ill be the guinea pig.

Why not just go with a stock replacement, as suggested?

I have an accel coil on my car. I got it used with an icm and bracket after my stock icm failed. Its lasted 25k so far with no problems. Who knows how many miles where on it before I got it. But no difference in mpg or track times after the swap.

I've never heard anything good from any hypertech products. Just leave your stock coil on the car, if it's not broke don't fix it. Back when I was a noob I bought an MSD coil for my car. Absolutely no difference in performance but it has been fine for the last 4 1/2 years and 25K miles.

I asked the same question a while ago but I was more specific about the specs of the coils:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/lt1-lt4-m...k-voltage.html

Unfortunately no one has any specs on the newer stock GM coils for the LT1 but I'm assuming they're on par with the MSD unit and I hate assuming. But what else can I do.
